FLETCHER Family, The.
The progenitor of this family was the late Col. Fletcher, who was an officer
in the British Army, and came with his regiment to Canada during the War of
1812. For his services in the Army, he received a large grant in Peel Co., and
also in Tecumseh Tp. He returned to Ire., and sent his 5 sons and 1 daughter,
viz: Robert, Edward, Joseph, Arthur, James, and Mary, who afterwards m. John
Little, to Canada to take possession of this land. Some of these farms are
still in the possession of the Fletcher family, who compose some of the
wealthiest and most influential citizens of the locality, as well as elsewhere,
where they have settled. The late Col. Fletcher, never returned to Canada, but
d. in Ire., at the age of 103 years.
James, the youngest son , was b. in Co. Sligo, Ire., in 1806, and came to Canada with his brothers and sister in 1818. They set. in Chinguacousey, where he was practically raised and afterwards m. Margaret Little. Some years later, he removed to Middlesex Co., where he became an influential and prosperous citizen, and d. there in 1903, aged 97 years. His wife predeceased him ten years. Of his family of nine children, only one, Edward Fletcher, b. Peel Co., 1834, became a citizen of Wellington Co. He came to Eramosa in 1865, having previously lived a few years in Caledon. He purchased 150 acres, lot 23, con. 6, where he has since made his home. He m. Ann M. Jepson, in Peel Co. Issue: Robert Talbot, James, and Jennie. The family belong to the Meth. church, and in politics are Conservative. Edward Fletcher, and his son James, now own and run the farm in conjunction, carrying on mixed farming, and making a specialty of the best class of horses, both carriage and draft.
