DOBBIN, John
(d.), was b. Co. Armagh, Ire., in 1809, and d. 1883. He came to
Canada with his parents in 1825, and in 1826, set. in West Garafraxa, on lots
23 & 26, con. 7. He m. Mary Ann McKee, dau. of John McKee, in 1833. At the
time he came, it was all woods. Galt, thirty-five miles away, was the
nearest post office, and Guelph had not then been started. The nearest mill
was at Preston, reached by a five days journey over an Indian trail, with
oxen attached to a jumper. Fording the Irvine and Grand Rivers, at all
seasons of the year, was one of the difficulties they were obliged to
overcome.
