DICKSON, William
, (d.), b. in York Co., Ont., 1831, d. 1880, age 49. This
respected pioneer was brought up near the city of Toronto, when it was little
more than a village, and known as "Muddy Little York." He m. Susannah
Armstrong, who d. in 1884, age 55 years. They came to Mornington, and set. on
the township line of Maryborough, in the early fifties where he acquired 100
acres of land in each township. The country was then a wilderness. The
settlers were few and far between, and the roads were "blazer" paths through
the forest, but nothing daunted these brave pioneers; they came with the
determination of hewing homes out of the forest, and they succeeded amidst
privations that can hardly be realized at this time. The late William
Dickson, was a Conservative, and an L. O. L. Like most of his neighbours, he
started life with little, and by his own exertions, accumulated a fine
property, besides raising, educating and starting his family in life. Of his
surviving children, Mrs. David McWaters, now lives on the old homestead;
Pemelia, is a missionary in Africa; and George H., owns and resides on lot 8,
con. 7, Maryborough, where he has 100 acres. The family were all b. on the
township line, George H. Dickson, has been Reeve of Maryborough four years
and is a leading citizen and successful farmer. He m. first, Mary Wood. She
d. in 1896, leaving one daughter, Roxy Belle. In 1898, he m. Alice
Everett. Issue : George A., Edith A., and Mellia J. The Dickson family is a
representative one, and its members have always been interested in church and
other matters, conducive to the welfare of the community.
