CURTIS, John, Sr . (d.), was one of the first settlers in Luther in 1855. He was b. in Buckinghamshire, Eng., and d. on Luther farm in 1875. The family by his first wife, viz.: William, Mrs. Joseph Walton and Thomas, remained in England. The children by Mary Bedford, his second wife, were also b. in England. Thev came to Canada with their parents, and are as follows: Richard, Henry, Mrs. Edwin Allen (d.), and John, Jr.

The late John Curtis, Sr., purchased 200 acres in Luther, lot 8, Con. 2, which was at this time solid bush. This farm he cleared. With a few other settlers he had a "bee," and erected one of the-first schoolhouses in Luther. It was located on the town line of Luther and Arthur, and he was one of its first Trustees. Mr. Bradley was the first teacher. Mr. Curtis was a Church warden in the Church of England in England, which position was taken by his son William when he left for Canada. In politics he was a liberal, and although he never sought municipal honors, he was a man of strong opinions, and took a healthy interest in the political events of his day.

John, Jr., b. Eng., 1849, came to Canada with his parents in early youth. He was raised in Luther and Guelph Tps., but, after his marriage to Mary Bedford in 1873, lived for some years in Arthur and Egremont, after which he purchased 50 acres (part of the old homestead) in Luther, and 100 acres on.the next concession. Here they lived until 1893, when he sold out and came to Guelph Tp., and In 1897 purchased lots 2, 3, 4 and 5, con. 5, Guelph Tp., containing 200 acres, where he now lives. The farm is a valuable one, and is situated only a short distance from Guelph City. John Curtis, Jr.'s, success has been achieved by his own industry. Issue: Annie, Edward, William, George, Mary J., and James. The family belong to the Roman Catholic church, and in politics Mr. Curtis is a Conservative.

Edward bought 77 acres, the southwest part of lot 8, con. 7 division C, on the Eramosa Road where he now resides. He m. Mary Hawley in 1899. The have four children: John, James, Mary and Margaret.

George purchased a lot containing 5 acres on the Grange Road, where he now lives. He m. Annie A. Hudson in 1903. Issue: John R. Annie m. George Beitz in 1906 and lives at Gorouck.

Mary J. and James are at home.
