CROSBY Family, The. The founder of this family in Canada was the late Thomas Crosby, who m. Mary Ward. They were b. in Yorkshire, Eng., and came to Canada with their family in 1856, and set. in Oxford Co. When the family arrived in New York, their means were exhausted, and they were compelled to send to Oxford Co. for money to get them there. This is only mentioned as an indication of the pluck of the early settlers, and what they were willing to endure that their families might have a better chance in life and, as a sequel to this, we might add, that in this particular case, as in many others, the families of these pioneers, early knowing the value of money, and something of the responsibilities of life, became the most successful citizens in the communities where they cast their lot.

The late Thomas Crosby d. in 1881, age 71 years, while his wife d. in 1894, age 89 years. Of their issue: Thomas was educated for the ministry and in 1861 became a missionary in B.C. among the Indians. He was a pioneer, and still lives there.

Robert carried on the tannery business in Mich., and became very prosperous; George is a leading farmer in Oxford Co.; William is also a farmer in Dorchester; Mrs. Frederick set. Ingersoll; Mrs. John Kirkpatrick, Norwich; Mrs. Thomas Barclough, Ingersoll.

John, b. Yorkshire, Eng., 1834, was twenty-two years of age when the family came to Canada. He started without capital, and followed farming in Oxford Co. seven years, and in Middlesex Co., fourteen years. He came to Guelph Township in 1884, and purchased and set. on 193 acres, lots 19, 20, 21 and 22, con. 2D., and after some years, retired with a competency to Guelph City, where he now resides. He m. Sarah Martin. Issue John T., George E., Rev. Arthur H., Fred C. F. (d.), and Dr. Frank M. Of this family: John T. m. Annie Darby. Issue: Annie E. and Daisy. George E. m. Frank Willett. Issue: Doras M.

Rev. Arthur H. (d.) was a graduate of Victoria College. He m. Miss McKenzie. Issue: Catherine G., Dr. Frank M. is a graduate of Toronto University. He m. Daisy Armstrong and set. Tekoa, Wash. Issue: John F.

John Crosby has always taken a deep interest in church matters, and is a class leader in the Meth. church. In politics he is a Liberal.
