COWAN, William
, b. Co. Armagh, Ire., 1825, and came to Canada with his parents
in 1829, and set. in Carleton Co., where his father took up
land. He helped his father in the lumber woods in the winter season, and in
1850 they sold their property and came to Maryborough, where they took up a
bush farm of 200 acres, lot 15, con. 13, and cleared it. At that time they
were obliged to carry provisions from Elora. Since then Mr. Cowan has been
very successful, and is much respected. He is a Presbyterian and a
Conservative. He m. Sarah Elliott, who d. in 1882, age 45. Issue Mary
(d.), George (d.), Mirian, Berlin; William E., Maryborough; Mrs. W. Green,
Cobden; Robert, N.W.T.; Mrs. McLaren (d.), Maggie, Berlin; Adolphus,
Moorefield; Ella, Berlin; Mrs. Scott, Allandale; and Minnie, Berlin.
William E. owns and lives upon his farm of 119 acres, lot 19, con.
9 , Maryborough, where he carries on mixed farming. He has acquired most of
his property by his own efforts, and is a very successful and much respected
man. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. In 1890 he m. Effie
Johnston. Issue: Luella E., Clara M., Clarence G., and Peter C.
