CARTER, Robert, Family, The. The late Robert Carter was b. in Northumberland, Eng., in 1789, and was of Scotch descent, his ancestors having come to England from Argyleshire. He m. Janet Wishart, and they had the following issue: James, Daniel, John, Robert, Jr. (d.); George Hume, Mrs. Thomas Todd (d.) ; Mrs. Robson, Brantford; Mrs. Dennis McWilliams (d.); Alexander, and Mrs. Robert Hill, Iowa. The late Robert Carter was killed in a railway accident at Cockburn's Path, Berwickshire, Scot., in 1845, and his widow came to Canada in 1847 with her family. She stopped for a awhile in Hamilton, and then came to Guelph. She d. in 1854.

James, was b. in Berwickshire, Scot., in 1818. In 1849, he m. Jane McGall, in Scot., who d. in 1879, He stopped in Hamilton about one year, and at Waterdown for a year, and then came to Guelph Tp., and exchanged his Waterdown property for 60 acres, on Dundas road, and later bought 120 acres adjoining the Howitt farm, where he is still living. He was connected with his brothers in contracting for some years, after which he devoted his time to his farm. Issue: James, Jr., St.Thomas; Dr. Robert, (d.); William, in the flour and feed business, Guelph, and Mrs. William Harrison, Guelph; George Hume, Jr., V. S., Mich.; Jane, and John. The latter has purchased the homestead farm in Guelph Tp., containing 182 acres where he carries on mixed farming, but makes a specialty of raising thoroughbred race horses, which have taken prizes at the surrounding agricultural fairs.

Daniel, b. in Scot., 1820, was, for two years, contracting in Port Hope, when he returned to Guelph, and joined his brothers in the same line. He is now retired at Bothwell, Ont. He m. Maria Keisley. Issue: Daniel, Jr., Meth. minister in Ohio; William. and Mrs. John Little of Bothwell. John, probably the most prominent one in the family, was b. in Scot., 1822, and came to Guelph in 1848, in connection with building the Dundas road, with Cook, of Albion Mills. He was the head contractor of the Carter's, and built this road from Guelph to Freelton. He also built the Elora road and the Fergus road, as well as doing contract work on the construction of the G. T. R. west, and on the Buffalo and Lake Huron division. He also built gravel roads in Wellington.. Lambton, and other counties. He retired, in 1867, to his farm in Puslinch Tp., where be lived until his death in 1893. He was a man of great personal activity, widely known and successful. He took a very active part in building Knox church, and was Trustee and Manager for years.

Robert, Jr., was engaged with his brothers in the contracting business on the Dundas road for two years, then spent two years in Australia returned and farmed for some time in Puslinch, afterwards going to B. C., and finally embarking in the grain trade at Elora, Ont., where he d. in 1885, age 60. He m. Miss Diggins, who lives in Saginaw, Mich. Issue: Dr. Robert, practicing in Saginaw, Mich., and Alexander, also in Saginaw. George Hume, b. Ayton, Berwicksbire, Scot., 1827, came to Canada in 1847, and was in partnership with his brother John through all his contracts. We might say, in this connection, that the Carters were very large contractors in their day, employing, it times, as high as 400 men. George Hume retired, in 1867, to his 300 acre farm just east of the City of Guelph. He was a School Trustee for nine years, and was made the Magistrate by the Mowat Govt. He was active in the building of Knox Church, in which he is an Elder. As will be seen, he has had a wide business experience, and his life has been a successful one. He m. Annie McArthur of Erin. Issue: George Wishart, M.A., Pres. minister; Dr. John, Medical Missionary, East Africa, and Mrs. Arch. McDonald, Erin. Alexander, son of Robert Carter, m. Jennie Thomson, and set. in Elora, where he is a grain buyer. Issue: William, Frederick, Robert, Nettie, teacher, High School, Galt; May in N.Y., and Allie, at home.
