BURROWS, Thomas.
This old pioneer, who was the first miller in Harriston, was b. in
Devonshire, Eng., in 1826, and was raised and educated there. In 1851 he came
to Canada, stopping for a while in Hamilton, Sparta and Springfield. In 1856
he came up to Harriston and assumed charge of the new mill just finished by
Joshua Harrison. Here in this old-fashioned mill he ground the wheat and made
the flour for the settlers for miles around, and thus became favorably
acquainted with them. His upright dealing and strict integrity won their
confidence and respect, which he has always retained. About 1866 he, in
company with his brother purchased 100 acres, lot 28, con. 6, Minto, and on
this farm they have since resided, although for the past few years they have
practically retired from active business. Thomas Burrows m. Ann Downing in
Eng. They have had the following issue: Mrs. Edward Smith, set. Minto; Mrs.
Henry Cooper, set. Minto; Maria (d. young), John and William. John m. Sarah
A. Stinson, and operates the home farm. Issue: Thomas L. William m. Miss
Smith, and owns and operates a farm in Erin.
