BURNETT, Alexander
(d.). The late Alexander Burnett was b. in Aberdeenshire, Scot., of a good
family, and came to Canada in 1835; settling first in Winterbourne and
removing to Pilkington in 1850, where he set. on lot 5, con. 3. Upon his
arrival in Canada with his family of four, his fortune consisted of the sum of
ten shillings. By his industry and energy during pioneer life, he acquired a
competency and was able to retire, giving each of his sons 100 acres of land,
and substantial dowers to his daughters upon their marriages. He was a
Presbyterian, and an Elder of Chalmers Church in Elora. In his political
views he was a Liberal, and held the office of Councillor. He was a temperate
man, and after a long and useful life d. in 1892 at the age of 87. He m. Jean
Sangster, who d. in 1867, aged 59. Issue: Jane, John, James, George, Samuel,
Mary Ann, Elsie, Sarah, Alexander., William and Robert F. Jane (d.) m. Thos.
Bridon, of Waterloo Co.; John m. Barbara Hunter, and set. in Pilkington; James
m. Jean Willson, and set. in Nichol; George m. Isabella Harbottle and set. in
Howick; Samuel is unm.; Mary Ann m. Thos. Marshall, a Councillor in
Pilkington; Elsie m. Thos. Mayberry, and set. in Perth; Sarah lives in
Elora; Alexander, b. in Canada in 1848, owns 100 acres on lot 17, con. 12,
Peel, where be carries on mixed farming. Mr. Burnett is a Presbyterian, and a
Liberal in politics. He m. Phoebe Emma MeCrae. Issue: Arthur, Ethel and
Alice, twins; Edna, Olive and Hazel, all of whom are at home; William m. Miss
Maitland, dau. of John Maitland, of Elora, and lives in B.C.; Robert F. m.
Susan Weir, and set. in the N.-W.
