BLACK, John , (d), b. Argyleshire, Scot., 1755, d. 1830. He m. Miss Campbell, and in 1819 came to Canada settling first in Talbot settlement near St. Thomas. Becoming disgusted with Col. Talbot's land administration, he moved to Nassagewaya in 1821. At this time his son James Black, went to Beamsville and taught school there for some years, and afterwards taught at Milton, which was then called "Martin's Mills". He then selected a location in Eramosa, lot 7, con. 7, on which he lived until his death. John Black was a Presbyterian and a pronounced Whig, while his children were ardent Reformers. Issue: Hugh, Sr., b. 1795, one of the first surveyors in the Province; James, b. 1797; John, b. 1801, of Nassagewaya; Donald, b. 1803. He also had two daughters, Mrs. Cath. McNair (d.), and Janet McKellar (d.).

James, b. Argyleshire, Scot., 1797, d. 1886, m. Lois Humphrey. He set. in Eramosa in 1829, at which time there were no settlers between his farm and the Ramseys. There was no flourmill nearer than Dundas, from which place he carried flour on his back thirty-five miles through the woods, not a waggon, not a store or postoffice in Eramosa. The first mill built near was a Norval, and next at Acton, and later a mill was built and a postoffice established at Guelph. In religion he was a Disciple and one of the earliest Disciple minister in Canada. He was a man of good education, and great force of character. He was Collector of the township for many years, and even in old age was a man of great personal activity, and was always highly respected for his character and integrity. Issue: Norris, b. in 1831, d. 1871; John, m. 1st Elizabeth Perrin, 2nd Mrs. Mitchell, nee Dewar; James, d. in Mich.; Judson H., d. in Detroit; Hugh, Jr., Hiram, d. in Chicago; George (d.), Eramosa, and William in Saltcoats, Sask.

Hugh, Jr., was b. in 1839, on the Eramosa homestead. He m. Susan Perrin in 1861. He has taken a leading part in the community from early manhood, was appointed Collector of the township in 1864, and held the position eighteen years. Then appointed Clerk of the township in 1882, which office he still holds, also Treasurer since 1891. He was appointed postmaster of Rockwood in 1897. He has been Secy.-Treas. Of Eramosa Mutual Fire Ins. Co. Since 1871, and was President of the Reform Association for years. He is a Disciple, and a strong supporter of the church personally and financially. He owns the old homestead of 100 acres and an additional 200 acres, on which his sons reside. Issue: Norris, Henry, Mrs. A. Tovell, Mary, Herbert, James, George (d.), and Albert (d.).
