TUSTIAN CEMETERY

Lot 25, Concession 9

Billings Township

Page updated -- September 14, 2001

This small cemetery was on the farm of George and Ann Maria Tustian.
Their twins died shortly after birth in 1888 and they were buried under a big oak tree on the farm. At one time, roses were planted on the graves and they were surrounded by a small fence. In December of 1891, a diptheria epidemic swept the district and this family lost four children within four weeks.
Diptheria victims were not allowed to be buried in public cemeteries at the time, so this family laid the bodies of their loved ones under the same tree as the twins. The deed to the farm included a clause not to work within so many feet of this plot.
