Appliance Stores in Gould

By
Bettye Bullington

Gould had three Appliance Dealers in it's "hey day".

The Gould Motor owned by O. E. "Bud" Culpepper, located on the Northeast corner of Hwy 62 and Kennedy Streets, sold radios and refrigerators. They were Crosley Brand. Our first electric refrigerator was a Crosley Shelv-a-door purchased at the Gould Motor.

My dad bought our first radio, a Crosley, from the Gould Motor. It was battery powered. On Saturday nights he would drive the car near the house, connect the radio to the car battery and we would listen to the Grand Ole Opry. Little Jimmy Dickens was just about 4 years old then. Sometimes we had an extra battery and could listen longer. The radio had a big outside aerial to make the radio signal stronger. As long as my dad bought radios he bought them at the Gould Motor, always a Crosley.

The Farmers Store owned by E. Q. Anderson, located just North of the Drug Store on Hwy 62, sold kerosene cook stoves in the 30's.

Scivally and Anthony, (Tom and Aubrey), Grocery located just south of the First State Bank, put in a T.V. Store in 1950. Neff Bullington was the service man. He later bought the shop. He made house calls to Duke, Eldorado, Russell, Vinson, Hollis and Gould. Many times he would come home with live chickens as payment. When colored television became popular the T.V. Shop was closed as Neff had no training for doing these repairs. The T.V. Shop also stocked washers, dryers and record players, or he would order them from a Supply Catalog if the customers didn't mind waiting. It was during this time Anthony and Scivally sponsored a men's outsider baseball team. The bought bright gold suits trimmed in royal blue and they were an out-standing ball team. Gould had a semi-pro Baseball Team in the late 20's but who sponsored them is unknown.

Cal Drake had "Drake's Trading Post and Antiques" which was a Used Furniture Store with a lot of antiques and miscellaneous to buy. They had all kinds of trinkets, dishes, milk cans, some used furniture and appliances, nuts and bolts; you name it and they usually had it. One of the largest crowds to gather in Gould was a Saturday in March, 1990, when Cal Drake auctioned off every thing in his store. The Volunteer Fire Department served Hot Dogs and Hamburgers. Drake's was located in the buildings that formerly housed "The Farmers Store" and, Cox's Grocery, owned by Mr. And Mrs. Floyd Cox.
