“The Sandage Family”

“A visit was made to Perry County in 1966 to copy
dates in Harding Cemetery and Lower Cummings Cemetery. A newspaper editor in Connelton, who is a
distant cousin and has done family research, was consulted. Most of my records from Indiana were
obtained from courthouse records by a gentleman who was retired and was
researching family records for people.
This same gentleman knows a lady in Tell City, Indiana, who owns the Bible of Thomas Sandage, Sr. He copied the birth dates of all 18 children
from the Bible and some other pertinent data about the family.”
Harriett Elizabeth Johnson was
born 24 November 1925, at Castle, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. She was the
daughter of Arthur Chester Johnson and Dollie Mabel Fain. She married Edison Edward Marshall, Jr., 25
November 1944, at Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma.
They have two children, Karen Elizabeth, born 20 May 1946, in
Greensboro, North Carolina and Edison Edward III, born 28 February 1948, in
Neptune, New Jersey. Both Karen and
Edison III are married now and Harriett has two grandchildren. She married 2nd Ray Pwen Browning
in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 3 June 1968.
There are no children of this union.
Arthur Chester Johnson, father
of the above Elizabeth Johnson, was born in Laclede County, Missouri, near
Sleeper, 18 December 1892. He came to
Oklahoma with his parents in 1904. He
attended school at Pleasant Oak, Bearden, and Okemah High School. He then attended East Central State College
at Ada, Oklahoma, where he met Dollie Mabel Fain. Dollie was born to Jason Ebenezer Fain and Gertrude Elizabeth
Yossett, 15 March 1901 in Coalgate, Indian Territory. Dollie and Arthur were married at Okemah, Oklahoma, 15 August
1924. They were schoolteachers for a
while. Arthur taught at Wilson, near
Henrietta, then at Buckeye, near Castle; He and Dollie taught together at Rock
Point, near Prague; he taught next at River Bend, south of Stroud; at Lone Oak,
east of Davenport; then he taught at Shaw School and Star Valley School. Both of these are southeast of
Chandler. After this, he entered Civil
Service and retired from Tinker Field in 1963.
Arthur died 7 December 1973.
They had three daughters, all still living in Oklahoma.

Elizabeth Johnson, who is mentioned in the beginning of this article. She now resides at Choctaw, Oklahoma.
- Mary Pearline, born at Prague, Lincoln Co.,
Oklahoma, 21 March 1930; married Maurice Hrock, February 1956 at
Wichita, Kansas. They have two
children.
- Martha Claudine, born at Prague, 21 March 1930;
married Carl Jackson Millsap, 7 October 1949. They have two children and two grandchildren. Martha married 2nd Loyd
Henry Clay Hildebrand, 3 June 1972.
Harriett
“Sis” Sandage, mother of Arthur C. Johnson, was born in Perry County, Indiana,
near Lilly Dale community, 12 March 1860. She married Joseph Ignatius Johnson,
son of William and Sarah Rhodes Johnson, in 1876 in Perry County, Indiana. Joseph and Harriett moved to Missouri in
1883 and lived in four or five counties in mid-Missouri. They moved to Oklahoma in 1904, settling between
Okemah and Wetumka. Joseph I. Johnson died 13 November 1913 and is buried at
Wetumka, Oklahoma. He was born 2
December 1855. Joseph and Harriett had
12 children.

January 1878; married Mary Voyles; died March 1948; buried Springfield,
Missouri.
- James Thomas, born Perry Co., Indiana, 4 October
1879; married Mollie Turner; died 16 May 1948; buried Memorial Park
Cemetery, Oklahoma City.
- Phoebe Elizabeth, born Perry Co., Indiana, 28 July
1881; married Homer Peerson, 1906; died 17 Sept 1907; buried Wetumka,
Oklahoma.
- William Jesse, born Henry County, Missouri, 7
January 1884; married Missouri Howard; died 27 April 1972; buried at
Bakersfield, California.
- Walter Allen, born Barry Co., Missouri, 27 June
1886; married Mary Myrtle Shannon, 29 November 1908, in Clovis, New
Mexico; died 3 April 1951; buried Okemah, Oklahoma.
- Maggie Ellen, born Camden Co., Missouri, 13
November 1888; m. Adolphus Ewing Hearn, 4 April 1909; she lives in Okemah.
- Charley Andrew Johnson, born Camden Co., Missouri,
2 February 1891; married (1) Maud Bass, 1912, (2) Alta Forney, 1943; died
13 October 1971 at Edmond, Oklahoma; buried Memorial Park Cemetery,
Oklahoma City.
- Chester Arthur, who later changed his name to
Arthur Chester because he and brother Charley had mix-ups in their mail
delivery. Arthur’s dates have been
described earlier in this article.
He is buried in Arlington Memory Gardens, Oklahoma City.
- Nellie Ann, born 13 January 1895 in Laclede Co.,
Missouri; married Ben Fox; Nellie is still living.
- Frankie Hugh, born 7 December 1896 in Laclede Co.,
Missouri; died 27 May 1906; buried Wetumka, Oklahoma.
- Claud Ervin, born 29 November 1898 in Laclede Co.,
Missouri; married Winnie Ann Coad, 1924 in Okemah, Oklahoma; died 8
September 1967; buried Memorial Park Cemetery, Oklahoma City.
- Joe Rudolph, born 20 November 1900 in Laclede Co.,
Missouri; has never married and is still living.
Jesse Sandage, father of Harriett Sandage, was born 11
May 1827 in Perry County, Indiana. He
married 5 April 1849 in Perry Co., Elizabeth Gilliland Cummings, daughter of John
Gilliland and Phoebe Barnes. Elizabeth
was born 19 March 1823 and died in 1899.
She is buried Harding Cemetery, Perry Co., and Indiana. Jesse died 12 June 1894 and is buried in
Hugo Cemetery, Camden Co., Missouri.

“Maggie”, born 29 March 1854 in Perry Co.; married Hiram Myers, 4 March
1875 at Cannelton, Perry Co.; died 3 January 1938; buried at Hugo,
Missouri.

Thomas, born 1856 in Perry Co.; married Phoebe Rhodes; buried Hugo
Cemetery, Camden Co., Mo.
- Miles,
born 1858 in Perry Co.; married Cynthia Eva Harrison, 1881; buried Perry
Co.

- Ulysses
Grant, born 1866 in Perry Co.; married Josephine Collignon, 1888 in Perry
Co.; died 1947; buried at Cannelton, Perry Co., Indiana.
Thomas Sandage, father of Jesse
Sandage, was born 9 February 1776, in Union County, South Carolina to Nathan
and Mary Sandage. He married (1) Mary
Ann Simonson, daughter Magnus Simonson, about 1803; (2) Rachael Terry, daughter
of John Terry and Esther Brown in 1821 in Perry Co., Indiana. Thomas and Mary Ann came to Perry County
about 1813. Mary Ann died after 1816. Thomas died 18 April 1852 and was buried in
Perry County.

born 17 March 1804 in Union Co., South Carolina; married 24 March 1824 to
Mary Quick in Perry Co., Indiana.
- Moses,
born 1 September 1805 in Union Co., South Carolina; married (1) 4 October
1826 to Deborah Comstock (2) Sarah “Sally” Harding, 6 November 1828, both
in Perry Co.; died May 1874, buried in Perry County.
- Thomas
Sandage, Jr., born 28 March 1807 in Tennessee; married1 February 1827 to
Margaret Lasher in Perry County.
- Francis,
born 28 March 1807 in Tennessee; must have died young; no record except birth.
- Eleanor,
born 29 August 1809, birthplace unknown; married 1826 to Elias Terry in
Perry Co.; died 12 March 1850; buried Perry County.
- Mary,
born 5 February 1811, birthplace unknown; married 6 May 1830 to Phillip
Howell in Perry Co.
- William
Canidy, born 11 May 1813 in Kentucky; married (1) 9 February 1813 to
Elizabeth Coffey; (2) 22 May 1853 to Nancy J. Snelling; (3) 19 Oct. 1871
to Emily Gasser, all in Perry Co.
- Daniel
Sandage, born 28 November 1816 in Perry Co., Indiana; birth record is the
only record we have on Daniel.
Rachael
Terry Sandage was born in 1804 in Botetourt County, Virginia. She died 29 July 1868 and is buried in Perry
County. The children of Thomas and
Rachael are:

They had three sons (perhaps others, but only three sons were listed in
Nathan’s will):

- Moses,
married Charity, came to Indiana about the same time as his brother,
Thomas. Moses must have died
before 1818, because Charity is listed in the 1818 Perry Co. tax records.
Reference: The will of Nathan Sandage (Sandridge) made
29th day of _____ (month) 1800 and recorded 5 April 1819 in Union
County, South Carolina. It mentions his
wife and three sons.
