Kaw Indian Cemetery
at Washunga, Kay County, OK

The sacred burial grounds of the Kaw Indians will be found about one mile north of the small town of Kaw City, in a small settlement known as Washunga. Washunga is named after the last chief of the Kaws even through the spelling given the settlement is an abbreviation of the spelling of his name which was Wahshungah. Many of the headstones contain well perserved photographs of the deceased. This burial ground as well as the town site of the Kaw City will be under water when the Kaw Dam and Resevoir are constructed. (Convassed December, 1962 by Mrs. W. L. Hankins of Ponca City, Oklahoma.)
