I.
Location
– 4 miles south and 6
miles west of Hugo. The road, once
known as The Boggy Road, is now State Highway No. 109. It makes a sharp turn to pass some
graves. Massive oak trees indicate a
former homestead was nearby. These
graves are unattended and were there before the section line was graded to a
road. Six graves now visible. They are:
1. Joe Allen, B. Sept. 8, 1871, D. June 27, 1917 (grave inside the fence)
2. William Baxter, age 44 years, D. April 1, 1916. “He was sick in bed and prayed continuous during his illness.” (grave next to road)
3. _____ Colbert (dates illegible)
4-6 Three graves marked with rocks without markings.
II.
Location
– 2 miles south and ½
mile west of the Kiamichi River Bridge at Sawyer. This is a Choctaw Indian Family graveyard. It was unattended, the fence mashed, posts
down, and in thick brush when visited in March 1960. What once was a short walk way had grown into brush and a large
post-oak tree. One large cedar had been
cut for the log leaving a stump 22 inches in diameter. On a nearby wind mound, there was a
homestead fragment.
There is a large, impressive Woodmen of the World stone which
reads: AHEKATUBBY, Aug. 1876 – Feb. 24,
1919. Near the base with a flower
design at each end is the name – Ahekatubby.

As time from work
permits, Mr. Thomas searches of these small cemeteries in the Kiamichi area
which would be flooded if a dam were constructed. Any readers having knowledge of these small cemeteries in the
area of Mr. Thomas’s search are invite to send information to him.
