Six Negro Children Burn To Death Wed.
SMITH
The Fire Which Also Destroyed Farm Home Occurred Wed. Night TWO ESCAPED Burial
Made in Zion Cemetery Friday P.M. E. J. Adams, Director
A fire, which took the lives of six negro children and destroyed a two-room
farm home of Bennie Smith living five miles west of town occurred Wednesday
night between ten and eleven o'clock. The origin of the flames which swept
the frame house to the ground is unknown, but County attorney Hugh J. Adams
after an investigation believed it to be caused by sparks from the flue igniting
the roof. At the time of the tragedy the parents were visiting a neighbor.
Two girls sleeping in the house, Ethel May 9, and Dorothy 12, were awakened
by the smoke and escaped, but through excitement failed to arouse the other
six children who were burned beyond identification, except by the size of
the body trunk. Arms, limbs, and heads of the children were burned off. Bodies
of all six children were placed in one casket. Those perishing in the flames
were James 16, Bobby Harold 13, Lloyd George 11, Bertro 7, Retha Mae 4, and
Alberta 3. Ethel May received a burned arm and the hair was singed from her
head.
Burial was made in the Zion Cemetery Friday afternoon at 1:30 with short
services at the grave. E. J. Adams, Inc., was in charge of the funeral.
