Cook Snuff - following text submitted by John
Walker on 24 Oct 2005 who writes, "This
was written by Edgar Snuff after the death of his mother, Catharine Cook
Snuff and transcribed by Faye Calbetzor Walker, the wife of Robert Walker
who was the son of Elwood Walker and the grandson of Edith Mae Snuff Walker.
It was typed it exactly as he wrote it - misspelled words and all."
25 Jul 2006: John Walker adds
that "Elwood is the (1st)son of Edith(Walker),grandson
of Edgar Snuff."
25 Sep 2006" John Walker
adds thant "George's death date is 3 years off..."
Catharine Cook (Snuff) was borned June 2nd 1828. Her birth occured in New
Jersey where Trenton now stands. Her father, Anthony Cook then moved to
Warren Co. Ohio when she was 2 years old. Her second birthday occurring
as they were crossing the Allagany Mountains. Ohio is where she grew up
to womanhood. She was married to Geo. Snuff of the same place on Dec.14,
1848. There was borned to them 6 children of which there was one pair of
twins who lived but a few hours then passed away. Granville a son passed
away in young manhood. Those that are still living are Mrs. N. J. Long of
Grand Rapids, John W. Snuff & Edgar L. Snuff who reside near the homestead.
All of whom were borned in Warren Co, Ohio. The father and mother with their
family moved to this state in the fall of 1863. The death of Granville occurring
in this state. With the exception of about 2 years she resided ever since
she came to this state at the same place. George Snuff the father passed
away June 13, 1898 [sic 1895]
leaving a widow 23 years. The mother who lived to the age of 90 yrs 5 mo
8 days. She lived a hale and hardy life until about 2 months ago and 5 weeks
ago took to her bed gradually failing until the end came. She was a member
of South Berrien County church of the Baptist denomination and contributed
to it's support as long as the church exhisted. She had great faith in her
maker as one can see by the prayer she made a few days before she died which
as near as memory serves was like this:
"Oh my God have mercy on me Lord Jesus take me in Thy arms and carry
me home to my God in Heaven."
(then a pause of a few minutes)
"Oh how sweet it will be when I get home to the my God in Heaven"
another pause,
"oh where are where are my children being told that they were all
here saying I want you all
to be good and sometime come home to me in Heaven" |

Edgar Landis Snuff (about 1875) - following text submitted
by John Walker on 24 Oct
2005
EDGAR L. SNUFF is a prominent
farmer residing on section 10, Niles township, and the years have brought
him a good return for his labor in the fields. He was born in Warren
county, Ohio, May 1, 1851.His father, George Snuff, a native of the
same county, arrived in Berrien county in 1864. He was a son of Isaac
Snuff, who was supposed to have been a native of Pennsylvania, while
the great-grandfather of our subject was born in Germany(Uetikon,Switzerland)
and was the founder of the family in the new world. George Snuff upon
his arrival in Berrien county(fall of 1863) took up his abode on section
18, Niles township, where he remained for a year, and in 1865 he located
on section 3 of the same township, where he died in his seventy-fifth
year. His political allegiance was given to the Democracy. In early
manhood he wedded Catharine Cook, a native of New Jersey, and a daughter
of Anthony Cook, who was born in *England, and on coming to America
settled in New Jersey, where he resided for a time. Later he removed
to Warren county, Ohio, where his daughter, Mrs. Snuff, was reared.
She is still living and resides upon the old homestead on section 3,
Niles township. By her marriage she became the mother of six children,
four sons and two daughters, but only three are now living, namely:
Nana J., the wife of Wilber F. Long, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Edgar
L.; and John W., who is residing on section 3, Niles township.Edgar
L. is the second child and eldest son in his father's family and was
about thirteen years of age when his parents left the Buckeye state
and came to Berrien county, Michigan. The remainder of his youth was
therefore passed upon the old
homestead place on section 3, Niles township. His early education was
acquired in the district schools and he afterward attended a select
school in Niles. He re-mained at home until he attained his majority,
assisting in the work of the fields and then sought a companion and
helpmate for life's journey, being married February 18,1875, to Miss
Sarah Foster, a daughter of George and Margaret (Johnson) Foster.Mr.
Foster was born in County Down, Ireland, December 27, 1817, and died
November 1, 1891. Mrs. Foster was born in Virginia, August 5, 1823,
and died June 26,1888. Both are interred in Niles cemetery.Mrs. Snuff
was born in Niles township,February 4, 1855, where she spent her girlhood
days. Mr. Snuff operated his father's farm for some time and eventually
bought the farm where he now lives. Here he owns one hundred and sixty
acres of land, of which one hundred and twenty acres is situated on
section 10, and forty acres on section 11, Niles township. He carries
on general farming and his wife also owns a farm of one hundred and
twenty acres adjoining his place. In his work he is practical and his
efforts are attended with a measure of success that makes him one of
thesubstantial residents of his community.Unto Mr. and Mrs. Snuff have
been born two children who are yet living, and they also lost one child.
The son, Clyde J.,one of the successful teachers in North Dakota, was
educated in South Bend, and at the Valparaiso Normal. Edith M. is the
wife of David Walker, who resides upon her mother's farm. Mr. Snuff
votes with the Democracy on questions relating to the weal or woe of
the nation but casts an independent ballot at local elections. He belongs
to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Niles and he and his wife
are members of the Rebekah lodge. He is well known in the county where
for forty-two years he has made his home.
*I read where if a family didn't know the birthplace of an ancestor
they would note origin of ancestory lines, this because the English wanted
distinction from the Irish. If it is true that Anthony was born in England
then he probably isn't the son of Joel and Keturah Meirs Cook.Anthony's
first son was named Joel and second son Robert named after Anthony's
father-in-law Robert Taylor. There is record of Joel Cook and Keturah
Meirs having a son named Anthony born in the early 1790's.So far I haven't
made a 100% positive connection with Anthony(1794-1859) and Joel Cook(1763-1796)
unless the account made by Richard Yerkes Cooke is true,Richard Y. seemed
to have a pretty good handle on family history, but I have not seen the
original copy either.

Declaration:
In order to obtain benefit of the act of Congress passed June
7th 1832.
The State of Ohio Warren County} April Term 1837
On this seventeenth day of April in the year eighteen hundred
and thirty seven, in his own person, in open court, being the
Court of Common Pleas in and of this county aforesaid now in session,
appeared Eleazer
Rigg, a resident of the county of Warren aforesaid, age 82
years : who being solemnly sworn according to law, doth make the
following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act
of Congress passed June 7th, 1832.
This Declarant states that he was born in Uchland Township, Chester
county, in the state of Pennsylvania, on the 28th day of December
1754: when quite young he, with his Father and family, moved into
Whiteland Township in said Chester county, and whilst residing
in the last named place, he entered the service of the United
States and served in the manner hereinafter stated.
Sometime in the month of February, about the 20th, as nearly
as he can recollect, in the year 1776, this declarant was enlisted
in the service of the United States for the term of six months
by one Lieutenant John Davis: He immediately
rendevoused [sic] with his company, consisting of 80 or 90 men
under the command of Captain Patrick Anderson,
Lieut. John Davis, and Ensign Septimus
Davis at a village called Chester, Chester County,
Pennsylvania at which place the company remained in garrison |
page 2
|
until about the first of June, during which time
the members of our Company were drilled twice a day, and stood sentry
by turns. From Chester aforesaid our Company marched to the City
of Philadelphia, then a small town by the name of Darby, and on
arriving in that City we went into Barracks & staid there until
about the 8th day of July, exercising twice each day & standing
sentinel. At Philadelphia our Company was placed in a Regiment Commanded
by Colonel Atlee, first name not recollected-Caleb
Perry was the Lieutenant Colonel and Philip Baten,
or Bateman, declarant does not recollect which, was the
Major. Whilst our Company remained in Philadelphia, this declarant
was in the state yard when the Independence of the United States
was declared by Congess then in session there - he recollects this
event was announced by the firing of a cannon. From Philadelphia
our company as well as several other[?] Companies under the Command
of Col. Atlee (he being the highest officer present)
marched to Amboy in New Jersey, passing thru' Trenton, Princeton
and another town, name not recollected, but declarant thinks it
was New Brunswick, & staying on the route long enough only to
rest at nights. Our company tarried at Amboy until about the last
of July or first of August under drill twice each day and standing
as sentinals by turns. Whilst we remained at Amboy there was cannonading
across the Staten Island Sound between the British and Americans.
Declarant recollects that some of the balls from the British cannon
knocked down the pillar of the Market House in Amboy - some entered
the roofs of other houses - also a horse was killed in the streets.
On leaving Amboy, our Regiment under the command |
page 3
|
of Col. Atlee marched thru' Elizabethtown
immediately to New York City, where we encamped on the Commons
in tents - here this Declarant saw Gen. Washington
riding thru' the streets of the City surrounded by some of the
regular officers of the Army. While at New York we exercised twice
a day and stood sentry. About the middle of August we were ordered
and did cross over to Long Island under the command of Col.
Atlee assd [assigned?] a few days after we landed[?]
on Long Island, and before the battle there, towit, on or about
the 20th of August 1776 the term for which this Declarant had
enlisted expired, and he obtained a discharge-a verbal one only:
but a battle being almost daily anticipated, the imminent danger
of the Country, and the slender forces of the Americans induced
this Declarant voluntarily to remain in the ranks, where he then
was in defense of his Country.
Near the last of August the battle on Long Island was fought
and this Declarant was actively engaged in it. All the day previous
to this commencement of the battle & for some time before
the British were landing their troops on the Island from ships.
The battle was a scattered, running fight, commencing in the night
and continuing the greater part of the next day. The line in which
the Declarant was posted occupied a position about one half mile
from the bay or harbor - it being on our right, and the enemy
attacking us on our left. We were drawn up behind an old fence
and the British occupied a line of hills and their musket balls
rattled like hail stones on the old fence before us. |

Declarent thinks that the American forces in the
battle of Long Island were under the command of Gen. Sullivan
and Lord Stirling until they were successively
captured by the enemy: he distinctly recollects seeing Lord
Stirling on horseback at one time during the engagement.
Declarant also recollects the "Flying Camp", so called,
from New Jersey, under the command of Gen. Mercer,
if he remembers rightly, was engaged in the Long Island battle.
The American forces being too weak to contend with the British &
Hessians a retreat was ordered, and we were all night retreating
into New York: The company to which the Declarant belonged was the
last taken over to the city, as we had been commanded to throw up
breast-works to cover the retreat of the American Army if necessary,
so that when we embarked it was day-break, and the enemy was close
upon our heels. Immediately at the commencement of the action on
Long Island, Lieut. Col. Parry was killed by a
shot in the eye - Declarant saw him carried from the ground. This
Declarant never saw or heard of his Colonel or Major after the battle,
nor has he heard from that day to this, what became of his Lieutenant
or Ensign - nor has he ever seen his Captain since but he heard,
sometime after the battle, that he arrived safely at home, he was
quite an elderly man. Without any Regimental or Company officers,
and with only a few remaining members of his company this Declarant
remained in New York several days with the Militia of Pennsylvania,
to defend the city, but finally it was thought advisable to abandon
the city to the enemy without any defences [sic], |
page 5
|
and thereupon he returned, by the same route he
came, in company with some of the Militia of Pennsylvania, to
his home in Chester County aforesaid, where he arrived sometime
in the latter part of September 1776. This Declarant states that
from the time he entered service of the United States as aforesaid
until he arrived at his home as aforesaid (which he reached as
soon as he could) he was engaged in the Revolutionary War, in
the character of a private, for the full term of seven months,
for which he never received any pay, whatever, except the bounty
money which was five dollars.
The Declarant would further state that he is now old and infirm,
and if he has erred in detailing dates, facts, and events, that
error is attributable to the frailty of memory attendant on his
age: he makes the foregoing statement now, as he, at this distance
of time, recollects the facts. Declarant lived in Chester County
aforesaid after he arrived at home, as aforesaid, and then moved
to York County, Pennsylvania were he resided about nine years;
he then went into Washington County. Sometimes called Red Stone,
Pennsylvania where he lived until sometime in the year 1800 when
he came to Warren County, Ohio and has lived here ever since.
This Declarant has outlived nearly all his other youthful companions,
consequently he knows of no living person by whom he can prove
his services: he would, however, name to this court John
Probasco Sen. a cler |

gyman and William Sweeny as credible
persons to testify to his general reputation. He has no documentary
evidence of his service; he never obtained a written discharge.
His age was recorded by his father in his family bible, from which
declarant has transcribed it into his own bible now in his possession
but where his father's bible is, he does not know.
Declarant hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension
or annuity, except the present and he declares that his name is
not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. The reason
why Declarant has not before this time applied for a pension is
that although justly Intitled to it, he was healthy & able
to take care of himself, and under such circumstances would not
ask for it: - but he is now old, weak, infirm & stands in
need of a pension for his maintenance.
Sworn to & subscribed in open court this day and year aforesaid

We John Probasco Snr, a Clergyman and William
