Date posted: Sunday, June 8, 1997

My GGG.Grand father was Samuel Hoy SMITH (b.24 Feb. 1776, State of NY) who was an early settler of Knox and Ross,Erie,Pickaway Counties Ohio. He entered Ohio from Ky. with Col. Nathaniel Massie about 1794 with brothers Anthony, Jerimhia, Robert, William and a sister Mary who married Cpt.Ichabod NYE (war of 1812). These people were said to be the children of Samuel Hoy SMITH and Mary STARR (Nortons history of Knox Co. Oh.,1862) Samuel Hoy SMITH is said to have come from around Goshen,NY and knew Dewitt Clinton's family(thus the name of Clinton, Oh.) and the Burr's.Sam's family history from this point Fwd is fairly well documented, he was a surveyor and a Mason. Also laid out the town of Clinton and Mt Vernon in Knox Co.Oh. along with others before moving to Erie Co. about 1818 and to Texas about 1840. But where the family came from before this is a mystery that my Father, Grand mother and I have worked on for over 90 years. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
