Johann Georg had 3 brothers and 5 sisters. After the death of their father they were sent to neighbouring villages and brought up there by different families. Johann Georg came hence to Berg and one of his brothers, Christian, to Dehlingen.

12.Johann Georg³ Meintzer (Johann Philippe Adam², Johann Jacob¹) was born May 22, 1815 in Volksberg, Alsace, and died April 13, 1897 in Berg where his tombstone is still there). He married Christina Maennling. She was born February 20, 1820 in Berg.
 

Notes for Johann Georg Meintzer:
Alsace and Lorraine are 2 different regions that yet share a common history and fate. They have been alternatively French or German, depending on whom won the war !

In Alsace they speak a German dialect : Alsacian, that exists till the V th century. Although that old, it is slowing giving way to French, especially with the younger generations.

Now some dates : in 1638-39 Alsace becomes French yet the French king engages itself to respect the rights of the German princes that still have possessions here, including the Palatine house (county of La Petite Pierre, near where we're living).

1674 : after the Holland war, German again.

1679 : but not for long, here's France again.

On the eve of the French revolution in 1789, more than one quarter of the Alsacians are still subjects of foreign princes who yet had sworn suzerainty to the French king. These Alsacians were hence French citizens, but not completely !

1871 : back again to Germany after Napoléon III lost the war.

November 1918 : return to France after Germany lost this time the first world war.

1940 : attached to Germany.

1945 : they've been French since then thanks to Americans !

That created complications. For example someone that was born in 1906 as German went to the German school. On thier last school year they had to adjust to French. Actually most elderly Alsacians understand and speak better German than French.

19.Henry George⁴ Meintzer (Johann Georg³, Johann Philippe Adam², Johann Jacob¹) was born January 13, 1849 in Alsace, and died January 05, 1944 in Swancreek Twp, Swanton, OH. He married Sophia Holtzscherer October 1869, daughter of Frederick Holtzscherer and Margaret Nicholas. She was born February 29, 1852 in Alsace, and died 1922 in Swanton, OH.
 

Notes for Henry George Meintzer:

Henry's father was 2 years old when his mother (Marguerite Meder) died in 1817 and 3 years when his father (Johann Philippe Adam, born April 9, 1775 in Volksberg, died 18/06/1818) died.

Henry fell in love with a young girl, Sophie Holtzscherer, also living in Berg, and became pregnant. Yet Henry's parents did not agree with a marriage because her family was too poor. So Henry decided to go to the USA, make a living there and then come get her and bring her to America. Sophie gave birth to a litlle girl in Berg on  May 22, 1869,  she named her Sophie Holtzscherer.  They they married in October 1869, probably back in Alsace.  Henry must have sailed to the USA  sometime after the marriage and on a "Certificate of Declaration" from the State of Ohio, Sandusky County, Probate Court, dated October 8, 1877.  It states that Henry Meintzer of Alsace Germany...".declared that he first arrived in the United States in the month of July, A.D. 1871, and that it is his BONA FIDE INTENTION to become a Citizen of the United States." This is likely the date when he returned with Sophie and his young daughter if he in fact came first without her as the family folklore goes.  He may have only made one trip to USA
with Sophie and not came ahead as the family story says???

Henry came to America and settled in Cook Co. Illinois. He farmed there for 2 1/2 years and then moved to Fremont, OH where he worked 2 yrs in a sawmill and 9 years in an iron mill before locating in Fulton County.  He bought 106 acres of land in Swancreek Twp Fulton Co. with only about 20 acres cleared and the remainder in brush.  He added farm buildings to the property and cleared much of the land. Also acquired an addtional 40 acres of adjacent land and soon had about 100 acres under cultivation.  He was a general farmer and specialized in livestock and dairying.

A Twin to Harold
There is a marriage license registered for both Arnold and his twin brother
on Oct 20, 1906 with Arnold to Elda Conklin and Harold to Elna Conklin.
Arnold and his brother Harold married the Conklin twins.
Arnold's marriage ended in divorce and Arnold lived his life at the
homestead as bachelor while his twin brother, Harold died young.
Arnold was killed while riding his bike down to see his 100 year old sister
at the Nursing Home on the corner from the farm where he lived. He was
found along the roadside and died from the injuries sustained when a
car ran him off the road.

She married John Ahrens. My mother believes that Elizabeth, as she was known to her family, died in 1945 or 1946. Her husband, John Ahrens, died earlier, sometime during WWI. He had a wooden leg, was a butcher by trade, and died at home. You have their children listed, and we can add some information to what you already have. Rose Ahrens married Charles Runge. They had four children,  Charles, Jr. Runge  was one of them Laura Ahrens note: we don't know much about her, but my mother thinks one of her husbands was named Willy. Elizabeth Ahrens married Al Usack. Additional information from: Margie Cole <[email protected]> I am the daughter of Helen Meintzer who married Ben Cole jr and had two children.  The first was a baby boy who was still born and never named.  I was the second, Margie Ann Cole.   Helen was the oldest child.  The second oldest was Delore who was named after his mother's family.  You have the last name as Delores but the original name was Des Lauriers.  I don't know if it was ever legally changed.  Delore married a woman named Marie (I don't remember ever hearing her maiden name. They had two children, a boy named Eddie and a girl named Maureen.   Harold was the third eldest.  He married a woman who was at least 20 years older than himself named Ann Schultz Simon and after her death he moved to National City California and remarried.   Jeannie was a Cadet Nurse during the Second World war and engaged to an Army pilot named Wayne who was shot down over Germany.  She later married Vincent J White and had five children.  Anita, Vincent, Sally, Harold and Marilyn.   Bernice was one of twins.  Her brother Bernard died young when the whole family came down with diphtheria.  She remained unmarried for quite a while and then married the husband of her best friend, Herb Pohlmeier, after she was killed in a train/car accident.   Patricia married a school bus driver whose name escapes me.   I married Robert William Riley and had two children Brad Lewis Riley who is still single at 49 and Corrine Ann Riley who married and then divorced Rick Kallsen and later Kenneth Harred who she had two children with, Zachery Harred who has a son Lukas Harred and Ashley Harred who is just entering high school.   That's the bare bones of what I know.  I hope you find it helpful.   Margie Ann Cole
