I recently purchased a book entitled -- A Standard History of Erie County, Ohio, Volume I by Hewson L. Peeke. It was published in 1916. I will do look-ups if any one is interested.

I have an old book published in 1916 of "The History of Erie County" Vol. 2 by Hewson L. Peeke. It is sort of a who's who of people in Erie County who were either big farmers, land owners, doctors or people in public office, etc... (This book contains over 500 people and the articles on them are in depth and lenghtly. Most of the people are middle aged or older so that puts their birthdates around 1820s on.) I do not know if this book has been republished and is available for research. It was given to my stepfather from his grandfather and only a certain amount of these books were distributed. If anyone is looking for a relation I would be glad to look them up for them.

She is willing to do lookups in the following:
  1. Erie County Soldier's and Sailor's Home Index in Sandusky, Ohio. (The records are in Xenia Library. This includes an index and an address where the records that are in Columbus, Ohio reside.)
  2. She will copy the records and mail them to you. Just drop her an email with the persons name. The index is alphabetical.
  3. Book about the Xenia Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home, now known as the Ohio Veteran Children's Home: "The Pride of Ohio". Many of the residents were from all over Ohio, but there weren't veterans housed there, only "orphans" or children of veterans in temporary placement. It's by coincindence that Xenia has the Sandusky Veteran's home records.
  4. List of all the orphanages and "homes" that were in existence in Ohio in 1880, with their counties and references to the volume and pages that listed the residents.

She is willing to do lookups in the following:
  1. "Erie County Ohio Cemetery Census before 1909," Erie Co. Genealogy Society, 1989. (Since this book is organized by Township and then by Cemetery, I need to know something about the people before I can look them up -- ie: township, religion, etc. I cannot take the time to look up every name in each cemetery.)
  2. 1959 Translation by Marion Cleaveland Lange and Norbert Adolph Lange of Sandusky "Einst und Jetzt", by Ernst von Schulenburg, 1896. (I have an every name index which I abstracted from the book on index cards, so it is easy to do lookups.) This lists many of the early German citizens of Sandusky, Erie Co., OH (but not mine!)

Hi! I have some information on Vermilion history proper since I usd to be the librarian/archivist for Great Lakes Historical Society. My successor is Carla LaVigne (pronounced LaVeen). They have mostly ship histories, not a lot of people files. A lot of folks used to come in asking for crew lists and such (everyone's grandfather was a Lakes captain!) but there's more information onthe shipping companies and ships themsevles. They do have a HUGE book from the Pittsburgh Steamship Company from the turn of the century that has crew recommendations and names from various captains. It's quite interesting. ANYWAY, I am willing to share any information on Vermilion that I have. It's in a huge research box since I'm working on a booklet about Vermilion which I hope to have done in another year. So I can't exactly tell you what I have - I even have a copy of one of the original plats from the 1830's. It ended up with the Erie County recorder after passing through many hands from the Huron County courthouse fire back in the 1860's. So I just have stuff on Vermilion. :)
