Feather Bar

I took the feather to watch it twist and play in the wind.
From the rocky outcrop my eyes strained,
to reach for horizons that would never show.
For with them the future remained so far away.

It danced and cried out in wild movements,
aching for its release against the glowing sun.
The rays grabbed at it and teased it with the breeze,
and even though with fingers tight,
it escaped and found a freedom short and sweet.

To drift in the current like it belonged in the sky?
Oh no but down it tumbled in twirls and bends,
the plume fighting to struggle in vain.
Down and down it disappeared into the canyon below,
'Til no longer could I hold it with my eyes.

Alone and lost until joined by a single teardrop,
round and warm to turn cold and grey,
it fell on the valley floor below to remain forever,
faded into the barren land of all things lost and alone.
