HALIFAX
COUNTY
Hatchet Lake
LOCATION:
Located near McGrath Lake, just fourteen kilometers
from Halifax, Brookside is a quiet residential neighborhood. Hatchet
Lake, a small rural community that now Brookside, is located on
Prospect Road.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The area may have been named for a pioneer who lost
his hatchet or it may be because the lake is said to somewhat
resemble the shape of a hatchet.
SETTLEMENT HISTORY:
In 1787, John Drysdale and the Parker, Nicols and
Drysdale families received a 1550-acre grant among them. Later in
1817, William Drysdale arrived, after being discharged from the
army, to live on his grant of two hundred acres. Other families
moved into the area, including W.D. Yeadon who arrived in the late
1880s.
BROOKSIDE AND HATCHETLAKE TODAY:
Today Brookside is blended in with Hatchet Lake and
is made visible only by the Brookside Road that leads to the
original settlement.
