Lincoln County was formed in 1779 from Tryon County. It is surrounded by Cleveland County, Burke County, Catawba County, Iredell County, Mecklenberg County, and Gaston County. Lincolnton is the county seat. It was named for General Benjamin Lincoln, a Major General in the Revolutionary War, in charge of the Southern Armies.
