Burke County was formed in 1777 from Rowan County. Burke County is surrounded by Avery County, Caldwell County, Catawba County, Lincoln County, Cleveland County, Rutherford County and McDowell County. Morganton, named for Daniel Morgan, is the county seat. Burke County was named for Thomas Burke, a member of the Continental Congress and governor of North Carolina.
