Obituary. JAMES HUSSY SEVIL. PIONEER LIVERPOOL PLAINS FAMILY. EARLY SETTLEMENT RECALLED. (' Murrurundi Times') , Born at McDonald 's Creek,- in the Willow Tree district, in 1862, the late James Hussy Sevil spent the whole of that 70 years in a life of activity in pastoral pursuits, and his death, which took place on Friday last, removes an other link in the chain of one of our splendid pioneer .families, his grand father .being one of the original settlers on McDonald 's Creek, and the property has remained in possession of the fam- ily for over a century, and they are the only holders who have retained possession of the original holdings. It would no doubt be of interest to a con- siderable circle to learn something of the early history of land settlement in this locality, which was practically contemporary with the acquisition of Warrah by the A.A. Co., just 100 years ago. Under the land laws, of the, day, tho original James Sevil, who arrived in the colony in the early years of last century, acquired an area of about 10,000 acres on McDonald 's Creek, to which he subsequently added a further area on Yarramanbah Creek. He turn ed his attention to the breeding of high-class merino sheep, and so success ful was he that in those days Brindley Park Bettingtons added some of his best to improve their flocks. In those early days a disease known as 'scab' broke out throughout the flocks of the State, and many people were ruined. Mr. Sevil was fortunate enough to hit upon a plan of combating this terrible malady, and managed to, save most of his sheep. In those days the settlers led a far different life from the. easy luxury of the present generation. Roads were practically non-existent, and sup- plies were only obtained once 'in per- haps six or even twelve months. Blacks were also somewhat troublesome then, one notorious member being a big chap known as Black Harry, who took away a young white girl from over Merriwa side, and she was never seen again. Still the old pioneers made good, and tho original James Sevil and his wife lay buried side by side in the Church of . England Cemetery at Murrurundi. The estate devolved upon his sons, James, John and William, and daughter (Mrs. Conroy). William ac- quired Miller's Creek (now owned by Mr. . Niall), and upon his death this passed to his brother James, who had also acquired Glen Moan. Selling Mil- ler's Creek to Augustus ' Hooke, and also Glen Moan, James Sevil acquired Mooki Springs from ''Hooky" Alford, in which he was joined by the late George Hill; Mooki Springs being sub sequently sold to the late A. A. Dan gar. John Sevil remained in possession of tho original holding on McDonald's Creek, where he maintained the merino strain, and carried on with eminent, success. He died in 1903, and was buried in the family plot in Murrurun- di, as also is his wife, who. was origin ally Miss Annie Hussey, a member of another old family. : It may here be mentioned that upon the death of the original Jame's Sevil, his widow married a Mr. Holmes, and thus was founded another branch of this estimable family. John Sevil left McDonald 's Creek property to his sons, and by mutual agreement, the subject of our notice managed the place in their common interest for a period of 20 years from 1901, having the complete confidence of the whole of the others. The pro- perty was then subdivided, and Mr. James H. Sevil came into Willow Tree to reside. Here his wife (who was originally Miss Catherine Clay) died about two or three years ago. Mr. Sevil's first serious illness took place on Tuesday of last week, being in the form of a stroke, and he was removed to Quirindi Hospital, where he passed away on Friday, .the funeral being to the family plot in Murrurundi; Rev. C. W. Nicholls conducting a service at St. Paul's and afterwards at the ceme- tery. The name of Sevil is well known and held in the greatest respect throughout this and adjoining districts, and a large number attended to pay their last tri- bute of respect to one who was the soul of honor and uprightness. The members of the family who are left to mourn are: Nelson (Willow Tree), Augustus (McDonald's Creek), Tarvey (McDonald's Crook), Miss Du- fy (Junee), Mrs. V. G. Heyman (Wil- low Tree), Mrs. Clifton (Sydney), and Miss Bertha Sevil, who kept house for her father at Willow Tree. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mr. John Sevil (Mullaley) Mr. W. M , Sevil (Murrurundi), Cr. E. H. Sevil (Bondi), Mr. G. A. Sevil (Burren Junction Mrs; Martin (Scone), Mrs. ,1.' 13. Holmes (Warrah Creek), and Mrs. Kelaher (Murrurundi). Murrurundi has always been the re- cognised town of the Sevil family, and seeing that the original founder of the family, his wife, and two other genera- tions lie side by side here, it is little wonder that they hold the old town in reverence and affection.
