Robert Thomas Reginald Foster - WW1 notes

Enlisted in the A.I.F. on 20th April, 1915, embarked at Sydney on 16th June, 1915, aboard H.M.A.T. No. 63 "Karoola". He joined the 6th Battalion at Gallipoli on 6th August, 1915, and was wounded on the 9th August and returned to his Battalion on 2nd October, 1915, and appointed Lance-Corporal. He proceded to France in June ,1916, and was detached for duty with 14 Bde. H.Q.s police on 14th July. On 20th July he sufered a gunshot wound to the left arm and transferred to England for recovery. He returned to France on 1st October, 1916, and promoted to be "Sergeant vice Tempy C.S.M. Correy Commissioned". He was wounded again on 3rd April, 1917, with a gunshot wound to the left buttock and thigh and subsequently died from the wounds on 11th April. He was awarded the "Distinguished Conduct Medal 6th July, 1917, for conspicuous gallantery and devotion to duty. He has consistantly shown great gallantery when under heavy fire, and has at all times set a splended example to his men." Honours and awards (Recommendations: First World War) Recommendation for Robert Thomas Reginald Foster "Has during the period from 21st October to 3rd November served with his unit in the trenches.During this period by his example and coolness under heavy shell fire did much to assist andinspire his men under very trying circumstances. His coolness and example deserves specialrecognition" 9th March 1917. "For continuous good work and devotion to duty. During the very trying periodwhen the Battalion was in the line near Flers he was carring rations to the front line. He wasalways the first to volunteer to take the place of sick men, and worked without rest during most of this time. On December 3rd 1916, during one of these trips, the approaches to the Battalion lines were being heavily shelled. After delivering the rations he came across a wounded man, who wasbeing attended to by stretcher-bearers of another Battalion. He immediately volunteered and helped to carry the wounded man to the Aid Post, through the fire and across the open. He has always shown a fine example to the men under him. He has had service in Gallipoli, Egypt and France, and has been absent from his unit only for a little while in hospital, on account of wounds received on 19th July 1916 at Fleurbaix." "On Apr 2nd 1917 at DOIGNIES he has shown great coolness and devotion to duty under very heavy shell fire and organised parties to take up ammunition to his Company who had taken up a defensive position round the village. This work had to be done in daylight and in full view of the enemy. He was of great assistance to his company commander and carried on gallantly until he was seriously wounded."
