Willis Asher
A WIFE REMEMBERS:
Sgt. Willis E. Asher served with the United
States Army Co. F 117th Inf. He was stationed
at Camp Roberts twice and Camp Nanden and Camp Carson.
"He served his country well. To my opinion he was one of the best soldiers and
husband and father in the whole world. He
loved God with all his heart. He never wanted
to miss church. He was a great believer in
paying his tithes. He sent them home to me so
I could pay them in his church. He loved his
country and people very much. He was
kindhearted to every one and loved me and his boys so very much.
"He was a Bible reader even when in
the fox holes. He read his Bible there also. When he had to leave it seemed that they took at
least half of my life that I will never get back.
"But I kept going to church and
praying and praying for him and doing the best I could raising our two little boys and one
of them was just six months old when he was declared missing in action. The other boy was 1 year, 9 months.
"After they got old enough to go to
school they couldn't understand why they couldn't have a daddy like the other little boys
who would tell them things they and their fathers did or something big their dad had done.
"It was hard and still is, but we
love him and miss him and always will until we are all together again.
"My husband was declared missing in
action the 17th day of April 1945. He was also
a bugler which they wanted him to take permanently, but he said he felt like that would be
letting the other soldiers in the regiment down. In
other words he felt like they would be fighting while all he would have to do was blow the
bugle and he didn't feel right to do it. He
could have been Sergeant long time before he was but he said he would rather be told what
to do than to tell others so he didn't become Sergeant until he had to.
"He is loved and missed very much.
"Our youngest son was just 6 months
old the day before his dad was missing in action. They
never saw each other.
