Melvin Earl Doty, deceased, served as PFC in the Army Third Armored Division in Normandy, Ardennes, Central Europe, Rhineland and North France.

His wife Norma said Doty told many stories of his days in the Army and related the following anecdote.

"He used to say that the only two things which fit him in the Army was his shoe strings and necktie.  They were having inspection and the officer said, 'Soldier, I told you to stand at attention,' Melvin said, 'I am sir, but my uniform is at ease.'  Needless to say he got a uniform that fit."

Melvin was awarded five bronze stars, a Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart.  He was wounded in Germany Sept. 16, 1944.  He carried a piece of shrapnel in his left shoulder.

Melvin's brother, Leonard Quinten Doty, also served in the war with the Navy.
