VANDALS STRIKE SECOND TIME IN CEMETERY
Published by THE DAILY JOURNAL, Park Hills, St. Francois Co. MO, Wed. Dec. 21, 1994.

For the second time in as many years, a solar-powered cross which stands atop a grave marker in the St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery has been destroyed.

The memorial tribute was placed in the cemetery by Cassandra Wisdom of Bismarck in tribute to her late husband, Jerry, who died last year of cancer. A similar act of vandalism at about this time last year also left the cross in pieces.

Since that time, the church has installed a new cyclone fence. When she expressed her concern to the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department, Mrs. Wisdom was assured the deputies would patrol that area when called to the site located on Rock Road.

The solar-powered cross was installed less than a week ago, in time for the holidays. Because it takes time to charge, Mrs. Wisdom said this morning that the cross had only burned for two or three nights.

The crime is believed to have taken place between 5-11 p.m. Monday. Once again, a reward is being offered for information leading to the prosecution of the person or persons involved.

"I think it is just sinful," she said. "Who would do this? And how many times will I have to replace this? They destroyed it. They tore the cross off the mount and solar pack. At this time, I don't think it's kids doing it."

Mrs. Wisdom cited recent acts of vandalism in a Bonne Terre area cemetery, where a number of tombstones were turned over.

Anyone with any information at all about the incident is encouraged to call 734-1358. A $200 reward will be given to anyone with information concerning the person or persons who destroyed the cross.
