My Dad (R1a1) is not a match with other Beaufort
County Waters family members (I.e., known descendants of Isaac Waters,
RS (before 1755-1808) or Amos Waters of the Beaufort County 1755 tax
list. The latter two are
both R1b1 and do match each other (genetic distance of 2 but using two
different testing laboratories so maybe the genetic distance is
closer?). My great
grandmother said that families of Isaac and that of Allen were not
related. I have no idea
what that statement was based on.
Closest
matches (although not very close) are Willard and Woolard.
From what I understand, the Woolards in Eastern NC are descended
from two separate families - Capt. William Woolard originally from
Norwich, Norfolk, England and the other from Samuel Willard who’s
family came from Barbados to NC. Dad’s
only match on 67 markers is a Willard with a genetic distance of 7.
Based on where some of the Willards trace their ancestry, I think
it is possible that my Dad’s line originated somewhere near Tunbridge
Wells in Kent, UK. This
area has historically had both Willards and Waters’ so either MRCA was
prior to the use of surnames or the line is the result of an NPE.
According the work of at least one researcher, Dad’s uncommon
DYS388=10 is possibly Norman in origin and came to England during the
Norman invasion.

Although Allen’s line does not match with the line of Isaac
Waters, there does seem to be a close relationship with Isaac’s
family. 1) Allen appears as
a witness on several documents along with Isaac’s youngest son, Thomas
Long Waters, including the will of Thomas Long’s father-in-law, Thomas
Wallace. 2)
Allen’s son, Thomas was living in the household of Thomas Long
Waters in the 1860 census with his motherless daughter, Alvania (b.
1856). 3)
Allen’s grandson, Bartimus Macon Waters (1868-1938) was given
the same name as a great grandson of Isaac, Bartimus Macon Waters
(1840-1917). 4)
Allen’s grandson Bartimus Macon Waters married the great great
granddaughter of Isaac Waters, Minerva Elizabeth Waters.
Allen
Waters (or Warters) shows up in the 1820, 1840, and 1850 census for
Beaufort County, NC. There
is a story passed down by the children of Allen’s oldest son, Allen
Jr. (1827-1891) that their grandmother Millie used to tell them stories
about when the crossed the mountains of NC being able to “wash your
hands in the clouds.” I
don’t know if the Allen Waters family came from elsewhere or they left
to try to settle elsewhere (Tennessee?) and decided to come back.
If so, this would explain Allen’s absence from the 1830 census.
