He was involved in several major battles and as a result received numerous accommodations, including a Philippine Liberation Bronze Star and a World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Bagwell was a member of the Teamsters Union and employed by Jones Trucking in Kansas City for 34 years prior to retiring and moving to Cassville in 1986. He married Marjorie L. SSW: Ida - Research Note: Son of Abraham Balsom and Margaret Call. - The Hamilton Herald, Madison, Greenwood County, Kansas, April 16, 1941 - Dr. Balsom attended the funeral of his brother, Frank Balsom, at Seligman, Missouri, Friday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Balsom were visiting their granddaughter, Mrs. Joe Schooler, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the time of his death last Wednesday. Death was caused by a stroke of apoplexy. Funeral services were held at Seligman last Friday afternoon in the First Baptist church. Interment was in the Seligman cemetery. Mr. Balsom and wife operated a cafe here over twenty years ago. Many of the older residents will remember him. He was nearly 80 years old. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mamie Bass of Emporia. Mrs. Balsom was born March 29, 1866, in White County, Indiana, a daughter of the late Samuel L. and Flora Ann Steele. She married Frank E. Balsom in Burlington, May 19, 1884. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bass of Emporia, and one sister, Mrs. Josie West of Osawatomie. She is survived by three granddaughters, four grandsons, 10 great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She married Mr. Galyen and moved to a place west of Exeter. Galyen passed away and due to bad health she then had to be moved to Cassville. Her father was William Henry Harris, born Newton Co., MO, buried Seneca, MO and her mother was Ollie Etta German. Ollie Etta is buried at Pilant Cemetery, Barry County, MO. Ollie Etta German was a sister to my grandfather, Gentry H. German. - She was a homemaker and a participant in the NAMPA Rodeo and National Rodeo. She married Henry Manford Beaver on February 15, 1934, and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1975. She married Mutt Galyen, who also preceded her in death. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Without it, I would certainly think that Samuel's 2nd wife was someone named Sarah E. The tombstone clearly reads that and who would suspect that a tombstone name is wrong? This is an interesting situation. The Civil War depositions spell the name Adaline McGuffy. I, like you, thought maybe there were 2 women - first Adaline McGuffy (also spelled McGuffee) and then someone named Sarah E. But now I think they are one and the same person. Mary Emeline was declared the legal widow of Samuel Johnson Beaver and she got pension money every month. Widows had to go through rigorous proof to get money, so you know that the evidence was solid that they never divorced. Did Samuel ever actually marry Adaline? I know of no such attempt at a legal marriage, but that doesn't mean that it didn't happen. If they did, I sure would like a copy of that marriage certificate. It would have probably happened in Marion, Boone or Carroll counties in AR in the time frame of 1865 - 1879. When he deserted Mary at the end of the war, he and Adaline went first to Lead Hill, Boone Co., AR and stayed there about 3 or 4 years according to testimony. Note that Lead Hill was in Marion Co. when he first went there and then the county lines changed and it became in Boone Co. around 1870. I estimate he was in Lead Hill in the timeframe abt. 1865 - early 1870's. He is in Boone Co. in the 1870 census, but probably not long after that he returned to Eureka Springs, Carroll Co., AR. The documents imply that he was in Eureka Springs when he deserted Mary. They do not give a specific date that he returned, but they were in Eureka Springs when Adaline died abt. 1878 (per testimony). Testimony specifically says that Samuel had 9 kids by the McGuffy woman and that the McGuffy woman died in Eureka Springs abt. 1878. There wasn't much time - he would have had to marry someone named Sarah between 1878 (Adaline's reported death date) and Oct. 27, 1879 (Sarah's death date). The pension documents clearly tell that he never initiated a divorce from Mary, but sometimes each person assumed that the other got a divorce. In fact, that was the case with Mary Emeline. She got remarried abt. 1875 to a guy named John Jones, only to find out maybe a couple of years later that Samuel never divorced her. She immediately kicked poor John Jones out of her house and never lived with him again. It was a mess. To me, the details all seem to fit with Samuel's "wife" being Adaline except for the name on the tombstone! The birth and death dates on the tombstone very closely match Adaline's. I thought - why would Adaline (Sarah) be buried in New Salem Cemetery in Seligman, Barry Co., MO when she died in Carroll Co., AR (per the pension records)? Well, ta-da, New Salem is where Adaline's mother is buried and the mother died first. So, that makes sense. I also thought - how did Samuel and Adaline meet? Answer is that in the 1860 census Samuel and Adaline's mother were neighbors in Sugar Creek Twp, Barry Co., MO. They both lived in the same county, township and Post Office area. So, that makes sense that Samuel could have known Adaline before the war. He took off with her shortly after the end of the war which was in 1865. Adaline's mother was apparently named Elizabeth Amy Ray, and we find Adaline living with her grandfather John X. Ray and probably an uncle in the 1860 and 1850 census of Barry Co., MO. Per an Ancestry.com tree I found, Elizabeth's first husband, Roland McGuffy (spelled McGuffee) died in 1853 and Elizabeth quickly remarried to a man named Richard Murry (Murray). Richard is also buried at New Salem, but he died after Elizabeth and Adaline. Adaline died in Eureka Springs, but is buried in Seligman, MO. Those two towns are 20 miles apart, so they would have had to transport her body there for burial and probably bought the tombstone in the Seligman area, too. The style of her tombstone is not like Samuel's, her mother's or her step-father Richard's so we don't get any clues there. I can't explain why the name would be wrong??? I assume she was buried there at her death and not moved there at some later date. One of Samuel's kids by this 2nd "wife" is named Jobe Beaver and he is also buried at New Salem cemetery. He died in 1952, which of course is much later. One of Samuel's kids by this 2nd "wife" is named Amy - which is the middle name of Adaline's mother. Everything fits Adaline EXCEPT the first name on the tombstone!! The tombstone is very old and is probably the original one. I don't know where other researchers have gotten the name Sarah Elizabeth Ann Craton as this 2nd wife? Brewer was born in Roaring River township, Barry County, Missouri, Jan. 15, 1891, died Oct. 4, 1918, at the U. S. Naval Hospital, Brooklyn, N. Y., of bronchia-pneumonia, contracted in Uncle Sam's service on the U.S. S. New Orleans. His body was shipped to Seligman where after impressive funeral services the body was taken to New Salem cemetery for interment. He leaves a father, three brothers and one half brother, four sisters, three half sisters and numerous friends to mourn his departure. A large crowd was present at the funeral services held at the Seligman Union church, upon which occasion Rev. James Brattin of Cassville delivered one of the best funeral sermons the writer has been privileged to hear. Some years ago George served as a volunteer in the U. S. Army. His three years enlistment expired on Sept. 1, 1916. He again entered Uncle Sam's service as a volunteer in the Navy. He remained in this capacity until relieved by death. Of his condition for meeting that grim monster called death I can not say. We can only hope that he made his peace calling and election sure before passing on to the great beyond. But of this much I am sure, no one could die in a better cause than the one in which he was engaged, the death struggle between autocracy and democracy. When this great contest is won, as it surely will be, the nations of the earth will rise up and call blessed those who gave their all to bring about this glorious condition and in that hour the name of George B. Olive's mother, my Great Great Great grandmother, was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian maiden (Whose name is unknown to me). On July 31, 1850, Great-Great Grandfather, David Brewer, and family lived in District 31, Lee County, Virginia. This is in the very southwest corner of Virginia, near the Tennessee and Kentucky borders. The county seat of Lee County is Jonesville. In 1853, David Brewer bought land in Barry County, Missouri, in Township 21, Range 28, Section 1. He improved a farm here including building a house for his family and clearing land for cultivation. No record has been found that his eldest son, Christopher, lived in Missouri. David Brewer was killed in 1862 by "Bushwhackers" near his house and was buried in the yard. This was the start of the Brewer graveyard, which still stands. "We have killed your husband and now we come to burn his house." - Bushwhackers - The house was burned at the time David died, Olive and family continued to live there. Olive was buried at this site sometime after 1880. Evan, a son, and his wife, Naomi, were also buried at this grave site and the marker still stands at Naomi's grave. This old farm site is approximately 1 mile southeast of Washburn, Missouri. It reads that his father was James Brixey and that he died of TB. Martha was given as his wife's name. - Cassville Republican, Apr. 11, 1929 - General Lafayette Brixey was born March 31,1860, died at 5:20 o'clock Sunday evening, March 31, 1929 at his home 3 and one-half miles north east of Seligman, at the age of 69 years, having passed away on his birthday. Mr. Brixey had lived in Barry County since the Civil War, his father having been killed during the war. At the age of 14 years he began working at the mill at Roaring River and worked there until he was 21 years old. He also worked for some time at what is now known as the Fawyer mill near Seligman. He was married in 1884 to Martha Skelton and to this union one son was born, Crawford, who now resides at Exeter. He was converted about 25 years ago and united with the Christian church and lived an upright Christian life. He was a great worker in Sunday school having served many years as superintendent of New Salem Sunday school until his health failed him. He had been afflicted for the past 20 months with Bright's disease and rheumatism, later resulting in tuberculosis, being the immediate cause of his death. He was confined to his bed seven weeks and bore all his suffering which at times was very severe with Christian fortitude, never once complaining of his lot. Beside his wife and son he leaves one sister, Mrs. Freeman Scroggins of Cassville and two grandsons, also a host of friends to mourn his departure. A short funeral serviced was conducted Monday, April 1, at New Salem by Bro. He married his first wife, Louisa Clark on March 7, 1855 in Grundy County, Tennessee. After Stephen's mother Celia died in 1858, he took his young wife, baby daughter and his three younger brothers and traveled via covered wagon to Barry County, Missouri and settled there, as he had aunts, uncles and cousins in Barry/Lawrence Counties, Missouri. Stephen's first wife Louisa was born June 3, 1835 in Tennessee and died April 10, 1870 at a young age (childbirth?) in Barry County, Missouri. She had six children. Two months later after Louisa's death, Stephen married second on June 26, 1870 to Mary Rebecca Roller in Washburn Township of Barry County. Mary was born March 1, 1847 in Virginia and died April 15, 1907 at her home in Washburn, three miles from Seligman. She was the mother of at least nine children. Research Note: Obituary in the Joplin Globe Mar 20, 1965: Seligman, Mo. - William David Carroll, 102 years old, long-time resident of Seligman died at 11:30 o'clock Thursday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Angeline Middleton of Purcell. Born December 26, 1862, in Woodsville, Indiana, he lived there until participating in the opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma. He married Cora Alice Barrows in 1888 in Oklahoma (They were divorced. Cora second married Sherman Smith and she died in 1954 and is buried at Maplewood Cemetery with Sherman). Upon the opening of Sac and Fox lands in 1890, he homesteaded near Sparks, OK, where his wife died (incorrect, they divorced). In 1904 he moved to Eagle Rock, MO then in 1917 to Seligman, where he married Sarah Banks (Sarah Adaline Robbins first married Thomas Banks on Nov. 19, 1871 in Barry Co., MO. They are both listed on this page.). She died in 1932. He was a brick mason and carpenter, a former member of the Woodmen of the World and a member of the Eagle Rock Baptist Church. Richard Chaney of Seligman, MO gave the information. His stone reads June 14, 1830 and his death certificate reads June 14, 1828 and his obit reads June 14, 1839 for his birth date. - Cassville Republican, June 27, 1912, Thursday - John Chaney one of this county's highly respected citizens passed away at his home near Seligman, Saturday, June 15, from broken health and general debility. He was born June 14, 1839 in Coles County, Ill. He came to Southwest Missouri in 1856 and lived in McDonald County until 1869, when he moved near Seligman where he has since resided. He was a soldier in the Civil War and belonged to Company C, 14th Missouri Cavalry, which later become consolidated with the 4th Missouri Calvary. At the time of his discharge he belonged to Company L. He was married Sarah M. Fuller/Filler in 1865. To them were born 11 children. Ten are still living and were at his bedside in his last sickness. In the death of John Chaney the county loses a good citizen, his wife and children a loving husband and father. He was honest and sympathetic with those who formed his acquaintance and his Christian influence will be a lasting memory in this community. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. He was a rail road conductor and his date of birth was given as May 20, 1886 and not 1887 as the stone reads. Thomas Collier gave the information. - Cassville Republican, July 1, 1915 - Commodore Collier Dead: Commodore Collier died Friday evening, June 16 at the Rubow old home, near Seligman, of tuberculosis. Mr. Collier was a conductor on the M. and N. A. with his home at Harrison, Ark. Last January failing health made it necessary for him to give up his work and he then moved back near his old home. Since that time he has been living out in the open and sleeping in a tent that he might have the full benefit of pure air. He was a son of Thomas Collier of near Seligman and was about thirty years old. For several years he had been in the railroad work and had made rapid advancement, his last promotion being to the position of conductor. He had always been a careful and trustworthy employee and had won the confidence of the officials of the road with he served. Rising as he did to such a responsible position at his age was a good indication for a bright nature in his chosen work. He was married a few years ago to Miss Mary Rubow of Seligman. He leaves his young wife, father, brothers and sisters, and numerous relatives. The funeral was held Saturday at 2:30 o'clock at the Big Springs Church. The funeral was preached by Rev. C. M. Smith. She was widowed and Mrs. Paul Percival of rural Canton, PA was the informant. - Cassville Democrat, April 19, 1934 - Roy Cornel, native Barry County citizen, and high standing and well known farmer and school teacher, residing at Seligman, fell to death from a heart attack, in the field near his home, last Friday morning, after he had plowed one round. Mr. Cornell had been enjoying good health and had all appearances of a healthy person. H. A. Walker, prominent Seligman druggist who was walking from his resident in Seligman, to his store, observed the stricken man in the field and saw him fall. He quickly rushed to him and attempted to raise him from the ground but he had passed on. An inquest was not held. The deceased was born and reared near Eagle Rock, and was 55 years old. He was a son of the late W. A. Cornell, who preceded him in death about 11 months ago. He leaves his grief stricken widow and five children, 2 boys and three girls to mourn his untimely passing. He also leaves a brother, Troy, prominent rural mail carrier of Seligman, and hosts of friends. Roy was one of the county's respected citizens and enjoyed an extensive acquaintance. Research Note: Seligman, Barry Co., MO resident. He was the son of Clayton Dale Douglas and Mae (Douglas) Tilford. He lived in Savannah, Georgia, until the age of twelve when the family moved to Seligman and made their home for seventy years. Bob was a 1956 Southwest High School graduate and subsequently went to work for Webb Propane. He worked there for forty-three years where many friendships were made; he had seen many changes during that time, including the changing of the name to Empire Gas. Bob's family is very proud of all his accomplishments during his time with the gas company. He retired from the Seligman branch as Manager in 2003 and which time that branch was closed; Bob was the longest employee Empire Gas had ever had. On November 19, 1970, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Skelton in Oklahoma; she preceded him in death on February 11, 2017. Together they built a wonderful life together, along with their seven children. In addition to his parents and his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Robert Clayton Douglas, II; one grandson, Christopher Alan Arnett; and one sister, Ann Douglas. Passport number 397427, issued June 2, 1954 by Department of State, Washington, D. C., canceled and returned to Department. - Sept. 7, 1954, Joplin Globe - Seligman, MO: Shirley E. Fauquier, 22 year old Seligman girl who had been studying in Europe this summer on a Fulbright Scholarship, was killed last Thursday in a fall from a balcony at Gmunden, near Salzburg, Austria, it was learned by her family here. The daughter of a farm couple, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Fauquier, the girl was graduated from the University of Kentucky last June. She was one of 60 American students to go to Europe this summer for study at Scholss Traumsee in Salzburg. The group was scheduled to return to this country on the day of the accident. Although full details of the accident are not available, it was learned that the girl fell a distance of about 20 feet. Besides the parents, she is survived by two brothers, Robert Fauquier of the home and Louis Fauquier of Springfield, and a sister Mrs. Carol S. Napp of Danville, KY.
