Research Note: Wheaton Journal Jan. 7, 1932 - William Henry Banks was born Dec. 14, 1854 and died Dec. 27, 1931 at the home of his sister in Exeter. Age 77 years and 13 days. He was united in marriage to Haney Hart in 1888 who preceded him in death in March 1928. To this union was born one son, Arthur who also preceded him Aug. 20, 1931. He was later married to Mrs. Lucy Warner. In the last days of his illness he assured relatives that he was ready to go. - Death Certificate of his wife states she died in 1929 and not 1928 as stated here. - His wife was Lucy Banks at the time of his death. Inscription: "Blessed Are They That Die in the Lord" - Research Note: His death certificate names Henry Black, born in MO, as his father and Miranda Ray, born in TN, as his mother. He was age 22 yrs, 4 mos. and 28 days old at this death. The cause of death was listed as typhoid fever. Miranda Black, Purdy, MO, was the informant. - Cassville Republican, July 31, 1913 - Died at his home five miles south west of Purdy, Clyde Black, son of Henry and Amanda Black, after an illness of 48 days of intense suffering with typhoid fever, which he bore with the greatest patience and was never heard to murmur or complain but was often heard "praising God for the salivation of his soul and how sweet it was to know that he was saved." Clyde Black was born Feb. 27, 1891 and died July 25, 1913, age 22 years, 4 months and 28 days. He was married to Hermin Plancheon of Powell, Feb. 28, 1912. He professed faith in Christ and joined the Protestant Methodist Church in Oct. 1900. All was done for him that could be done by relatives and friends and by Dr. Kelley and F. A. Archibald of Purdy. But it pleased God to take him and we should not grieve as those who have no home but prepare to meet him where parting will be no more. He leaves a wife and one child, father and mother, five brothers and two sisters, two sisters and one brother having proceeded him. His remains were laid to rest in the Clark Cemetery after funeral services conducted by Bro. It lists his parents as William Box and Elizabeth Green. It reads that he was born June 15, 1859 and not in 1888 as the stone reads. - Wheaton Journal, Jan. 24, 1929 - Dallas A. Box was born at Cassville, Missouri, June 15, 1859 and died January 17, 1829. Age 69 years and 7 months. He professed his faith in Christ at an early age and lived a devoted Christian life. He was married to Martha Caroline Higgs in 1881. To this union six children were born, two having died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Stella Graber, of Pierce City, Mrs. Annie Montgomery, of Bartlesville, Okla., Clarence of Pierce City and Lester of Webb City. Butler first married Winnie Whiteley, they had two children, Mary Elizabeth, born 1851 in Arkansas and James Columbus, born 1855 in Barry Co., Missouri. Winnie died when James was an infant. He second married Eliza J. Smith on Dec. 17, 1857 in Lawrence Co., MO. They had Willie J., Sarah L., Charles M., and Rosetta. Eliza is buried at Muncie Chapel Cemetery. Following are affadavits for Eliza'a Civil War Pension: Pension Application for James J. Butler - General Affadavit: In the matter of claim for Eliza J. Butler widow of James J.; K 6th Kansas Cavalry, Lucy Tuggle whose age is 66 years, Residence and Post Office Grangeville, Newton Co., Missouri. Declares: I was acquainted with James J. Butler. Previous to his first and second marriage. His first wife died about 2 years before his marriage to Eliza J. Smith. I was present on the occasion of her death, as well as I remember his first wife died in the year 1855. - General Affadavit - State Of Missouri, County of Barry, Dr. R. B. Archibald, 38 years old, residence Purdy, Barry Co., Missouri, I will state that on the 13th day of April 1879, I was called to see James J. Butler and found him in the last stage of pulmonary phthisis or consumption. Was asked again on April 15th 1879 and found Mr. James J. Butler dying. He died in about one hour after I arrived on the 15th of April 1879. - Affadavit of Lydia M. Briscoe - James Butler came to my house on his way home from the army about the last of March 1865. He was not complaining of anything excepting a bad cough. Some times he was better, some times worse. The longest period of not seeing him after he came home was about three or four years. He worked nearly all the time to within a year of his death. - General Affadavit, State of Missouri, County of Barry, of J. H. Davis who is thirty four years old whose Post Office address is Corsicana, Barry Co., Missouri. - I was acquainted with J. J. Butler for a period of about five years prior to his death. I first became acquainted with him in February 1874 at Joplin, Jasper Co., MO. He employed me to work on his place a short time as he was sick. He had a cough during that time and complained of lung trouble contracted in the army and he said this was his difficulty or disease so long as I knew him. He was laboring in the Jasper lead mines. Cartwright - She Was The Sunshine Of Our Home" - Research Note: Cassville Republican, May 30, 1912 - Mrs. Margaret Susan Cartwright departed this life, May 23rd, 1912 at her home near Wheaton, MO. Maggie as she was familiarly known is the daughter of Halbeck Rhea and wife of near Clark. She was 20 years, 8 months and 15 days old and a bride of only two weeks when the summons came, having been married to Luther O. Cartwright on May 12, 1912. Funeral services were held at the home of her parents, May 25, conducted by Rev. Siler of Neosho after which her remains were laid to rest in the Clark Cemetery witnessed by a large assembly of people. She was saved at the age of 14 years and united with the Baptist Church at New Hope, where she lived a consistent Christian life or more properly speaking a spotless life of purity. It can be said of her, "She hath done what she could". Maggie had been in poor health for some time but was cheerful and hopeful and scarcely anyone was expecting her departure so soon but this only brings the old saying to mind, "To day we are basking in the balmy summer of life but next finds us silent in the chilly winter of death." - Luther O. Cartwright, age 24, married Maggie Rhea, age 20, on May 12, 1912 in Barry Co., MO. Research Note: Son of Hiram and Sally Cooper. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 31, 1916 - Hiram Cooper was born in Alabama, March 1, 1836, died Aug 25, 1916, at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 24 days. At the age of 11 years he moved with his parents to Maysville, Ark. After reaching manhood he moved to Madison County where he was married to Sarah Jeffries. To them were born five children, four daughters and one son. The wife and daughters are dead. The son, Robert Cooper, of Joplin survives. Mr. Cooper united with the Presbyterian Church at the age of 35 years, and lived a consistent Christian up to the time of his death. He came back to his old home near Corsicana to spend his last days, where he lived with Wm. Alonzo Garrison, of Exeter, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Obit: Mrs. Lon Garrison Dies: Mrs. Mary Effie Garrison, wife of Lon Garrison, died at her home near Exeter, Mar. 27, 1930. She was born Feb. 14, 1885 and was a daughter of the late John and Mary Packwood old and highly respected citizens of Barry Co. She was a granddaughter of the late Ben McCary. She and Alonzo Garrison were married May 9, 1914. To this union six children were born, who are, Leota Sarah, Thelma, Dorris, Wright Eugene, Morris Lee and Doran Ray. Morris Lee preceded the mother in death, Nov. 3, 1927. The youngest child is only three months of age. All of the children living were with their mother when the end came. The oldest child, a daughter is slowly recovering from an attack of pneumonia. Besides her husband and children, she is survived by two brothers, Sam Packwood of Clayton, NM and Hunter Packwood of Purdy, three sisters, Cretie Clark of Pineville, Myrtle Weaver of Exeter, and Esther Prewitt of Los Angeles, CA. K Garrison Takes Own Life - The people of this territory were shocked Saturday afternoon to learn of the death of J. K. Garrison, highly respected and well known farmer, residing east of Wheaton, who committed suicide shortly after noon by shooting himself with a shot gun. Mrs. Garrison and daughter Naydene, got ready to come to Wheaton directly after noon Saturday and Mr. Garrison intended to come with them but as they were about ready to get in the car Mr. Garrison said he believed he would stay around home and asked them to go on without him. Mrs. Garrison and daughter returned home about four o'clock and started to put some feed in the crib at the barn and discovered the body of Mr. Garrison lying on the crib floor. He had been dead for some time and it is thought he ended his life shortly after his wife and daughter left home. He placed the muzzle of the gun at his stomach and the charge ranged upward to his heart. Death was instantaneous. Mr. Garrison suffered a stroke of paralysis some time ago and had not been getting along very well, although he was able to be up and around. He had been despondent for some time and had intimated that he might end his life. He had hid the gun that he ended his life with and the family was unable to locate it. It is thought that he had the gun hid under the crib. Mr. Garrison would have been 62 years old, had believed the 7th of May, and spent his entire life within a quarter of a mile of his birth place. The place where he died was a part of his father’s 500 acre farm which he inherited. His father was the late John R. Garrison, who passed away over 51 years ago when Knox was 10 years old. John R. was the father of eight children; the eldest being 14 years old and the youngest unborn when he passed away. His wife reared the eight children and Knox was the first one to pass away. Mr. Garrison had many friends over Barry County, having been Judge of County Court of Barry County for the Western District two terms. He is survived by his widow, five children, Mrs. Effie Graber of Oregon, Ina of California, Mrs. Veva Hopkins of Washburn, Hubert of Purdy route and Naydene, at home, his aged mother, Mrs. Sarah Overton, who makes her home with a daughter, Mrs. O. E. Foster, of Wheaton, four brothers, Elmer, of Salem, Oregon, Chart of Purdy route, Ira of Monett, Lon of Exeter, and three sisters, Mrs. Cora Brattin, east of Wheaton, Mrs. Lizzie Foster of Wheaton and Mrs. Zula Higgs east of Wheaton, in addition to many other relatives and friends. | Headstone Note DC Howerton Photo Darla Marbut |

His death was caused by carcinoma of the liver. - Obit: Hurshel E. Gurley passed away Sept. 1st 1948. He was born September 4th , 1883; was 64 years, 11 months, 27 days old. He was the son of Albert Newton and Eliza Gurley and was one of a family of ten children. Surviving to mourn his passing are three brothers; H. H. and J. M. Gurley of Butterfield, and C. M. Gurley of Exeter; two sisters, Mrs. Fanny Shoopman of Bristow, Okla.; and Mrs. Emma McClure of Mineral Springs, at whose home he died. His father, mother, three sisters and one brother preceded him in death. He leaves a host of relatives and friends. We want to thank those who helped in any way; Mr. Culver, the singers, the ones who played the piano, the ones who dug the grave and the ones who sent flowers. May God’s richest blessings rest on all. The funeral was at Mt. His parents moved to Barry County when he was a small child and he spent the remainder of his life here. In January 1904 he was married to Miss Josie Montgomery (died 1906, buried in Berryhill Cemetery). To that union one child was born. His wife died in the year 1907. In 1920 he was married to Mrs. Minnie Smith. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Minnie Gurley; his daughter, Mrs. Madge Lee of Arlington, Virginia; and one stepson, Cleophas Smith of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; one stepdaughter, Miss Wilma Smith, of California; one stepson, Herschel Smith, preceded him in death four years ago; four brothers: Harrison, Herschel, and Mack Gurley of Butterfield, and Monroe Gurley of Exeter; two sisters, Mrs. Emma McClure of Mineral Springs, Mo., and Mrs. Fannie Shoopman of Bristow, Oklahoma. Three sisters have preceded him in death; Lou Strother, wife of Walter Strother, Alice Hankins, wife of Mont Hankins; and Myrtle, who died in infancy. A host of other relatives and his many friends have given up a dear relative and friend which can not be replaced. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, September 19, at the Mt. Pleasant church, conducted by Rev. C. E. Henderson, assisted by Rev. H. S. King. Holladay - Soon I will meet you by the river in the sweet celestial land and with joy our hearts will quiver as we clasp each others hands." - Research Note: Son of Sanford Holladay and Margaret Sherrill. His wife was Dazrean St. Clair. Dazrean second married George E. Loop. She third married at age 49 to Robert E. Osborn, age 67 in Pierce City, Lawrence Co., MO and went to CA. - Cassville Democrat - Historical Facts - April 13, 1907 - July 10, 1876, Dr. Holladay was arrested on a criminal charge by Bud Crawford. They started to the Doctor's residence, and nearing it, Crawford called to the Dr. to halt who refused, and Crawford shot and killed him. SSW: J. A. Howerton - Research Note: Stone was reported with the year of 1911 as the death date. Newspaper account gave Nov. 9, 1913 as the date of death. According to the paper Mary was a daughter of John and Emiline Stephens. - Cassville Republican, November 20, 1913 - We are sorry to chronicle the death of Mrs. J. A. Howerton which occurred at 1 o'clock, p.m., Nov. 9th. Her death was not unexpected from dropsy for the last 18 months and under the treatment of different physicians. She underwent many operations. Nothing seemed to do her much good. She bore her sickness with a fortitude almost beyond belief. Death was ultimately brought on by hemorrhage. She was in her right mind until the last moment and shook hands for the last time and was gone. Mary was the daughter of John and Emiline Stephens, deceased, and was 56 years old. She was born and raised in this part of the country and was united in marriage with Jno. A. Howerton in 1882. She professed faith in Christ and joined the Baptist church at the age of 15.
