Notes for Billie Ruth Gathright

Billie's life centered on her home and her role as a wife of 58 years to her devoted husband, Oscar Richard, and mother to their five children. She was devastated when their cherished middle child, Linda Richard Abadie, preceded her in death less than a year ago. Before her health began to decline, Billie's interests kept her active with her love of politics, antiques and travel. Shewas an ardent Democrat and campaigned actively for Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Carter, whose inauguration she attended. She and Oscar enjoyed traveling through the countryside to comb through out-of-the-way places in search of antiques for their home. New England was a particularly favorite destination and she designed their home to reflect the image of the cottages they saw during their travels. She loved music and dancing and especially enjoyed jitterbugging with Oscar to Big Band and Swing music from her teen years growing up in north Baton Rouge. She was a graduate of Istrouma High School and loved getting together with her friends from that time. Besides her beloved Linda, she was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Keel Gathright and Halsie Jane Chilton Gathright; and grandson, William David Brown. She is survived by her husband; their children and spouses, Kathleen Richard Callaghan and John Broussard, Donna Richard Rainone and Michael Rainone, Kelly Richard Brown and James Brown and Reed and Lori Richard; son-in-law, Christopher Abadie; and grandchildren, Max and Caitlin Magbee, Christopher, Louise, Gabriel, Robert and Raymond Rainone, Ellen and Kelly Margaret Abadie, James, Benjamin and Nicholas Brown, and Samuel Richard. She is also survived by her brothers and their wives, Herman K. "Sonny" and Jo Gathright and Wayne and Isabel Gathright; aunt, Marie Gathright; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Visiting at St. Aloysius Catholic Church from 9 a.m.
until funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Linda Richard Abadie Memorial Scholarship Fund, St. Aloysius School, 2025 Stuart Ave., Baton Rouge.
