Rosie Mae Gathright
Funeral services for Rosie Mae Gathright were held Saturday, February 17, 1996 at 3:00 p.m. at the Grace Baptist Church in Dill City officiated by Sam Hurst and Deacons of Grace Baptist. Burial was in the South Burns Cemetery in Dill City under the direction of Jack Loftiss Funeral Home.
Rosie was born April 10, 1898 in Portis, Kansas to John H. and Carrie Alice (Curtis) Kanouse and passed away February 15, 1996 at the age of 97.
Rosie spent her childhood years in Kansas and came to Oklahoma, near Alva in 1911, and later lived at Camargo and Foss. After her marriage to Elmer on December 23, 1916, she and Elmer lived most of their lives in Dill City except for a couple of years in California and a short time in Amarillo. Rosie and Elmer had eight children, three of whom died in infancy. She was a farmer's wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed the outdoors and rising early to work in the garden. She was a collector especially of dolls, and loved handwork. Her family members were always pleased to receive one of her quilts. All of them cherish memories of family gatherings at Grandma Rosie's and the good food and fellowship. Rosie became a Christian as a young girl and remained a devoted follower of Jesus Christ throughout her life.
Survivors include: daughter, Ila Haralson of Lubbock, Texas; daughter, Audrey Wilson and Husband Don of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three sons, David Gathright and wife Wilma of Dill City, Jesse Gathright of Springfield, Missouri, and Glen Gathright of the home in Dill City; 15 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and nine great, great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer, four sisters, one brother, and one grandson.
Pallbearers were grandsons: David Haralson, Gaylon Gathright, Gordon Gathright, Arlan Haralson, Danny Gathright and Mike Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters: Wilta Haralson, Cloie Howard, Sue Parmelee, Sherry Logan, Karin Haralson, Nelva Smith, Anita Headrick, Lorie Stone and Catherine Bynon.

Rosie Gathright honored on her 90th birthday
The family of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Gathright met for a reunion and dinner at the Senior Citizens Center in Dill City Saturday, April 2, in honor of Rosie Gathright's 90th birthday.
Those present were Glen Gathright of Dill City, David and Wilma Gathright of Dill City, Ila Haralson of Lubbock, Tex., Audrey and Don Wilson of Albuquerque, N.M., Rex and Nelva Smith, Valerie and Kayla of Leveland [sic], Tex., Arlan and Betty Haralson, Carrie and Dee of Lubbock, Tex., Jim and Cloie Muncie, Misty and Brooke of Shallowater, Tex., James and Karin Sullivan and Stacey of Burleson, Tex.
Gaylon and Florence Gathright, Julie and David of Clinton, Don and Sue Parmelee, Becky and Clint of Turpin, and Duane and Anita Headrick, David, Kaysha, Talena and Steve of Moore, Gordon and Valorie Gathright, Russell and Nolan of Abilene, Tex., Mike and Mary Wilson of Albuquerque, N.M., Tom and Cathy Bynon of Albuquerque, N.M., Danny and Jennifer Gathright and Jason of Springfield, Miss. [sic; should be Mo.], and Wesley and Georgia Blevins of Verden.
The group met again on Sunday, April 3, for lunch and a reception for Rosie.
Since her hobbies are dolls and quilts, the cake was topped with an iced doll in white and yellow and some of her quilts were used to cover the tables in the hall. White and yellow tulips and daffodils were used to decorate the guest registration table and serving table.
The large display of photographs of Rosie's life was of special interest.
Those present, in addition to Saturday's guests, were Carl and Vesta Franklin of Moore, David Haralson of Shallowater, Tex., Doris Bruce, Melody, Cindy and Michaela of Oklahoma City, Delbert and Maxine Martin of Chickasha, Alma Baker (Rosie's sister) of Verden, Mrs. Hitt (Delbert's mother) of Verden, Barney and Myrtle Jones of Canute, Tom and Nina Stanley of Elk City and Aletha Stafford of Riverside, Calif.
Those present from Dill City included Joe and Hazel Focht, Marie Whinery, Kelby Church, Ocie Van-Nest, Hoyt Williams, Ralph and Evelyn Loftiss, Elton and Della Jo Christian, Henry and Emma Jean Newman and Tom, Linnie Slater, Ira and Alta Goodfellow, Jim and Vesta Stewart, Suzie Hertzler, Pat and Doyle Loftiss, F.A. and Gayle Clayton, Frank and Daisy Prickett, Travis and Vena Teel, Darlene Moore, Pearlee Williams, Rev. Jerry and Jenny Fonte and Jeanette and Chris, Marie Cox, Verna Mae Bence, Robert and Carlene Kellogg, Lena Huckleberry, Tex Baker, Dora Baker and John and Ray and Leroy Killer.
The name on her death certificate is Rosie Mae Gathright. Cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest. She died at Elk City Nursing Center.
Headstone of her grave says Rosie M. Gathright; Apr. 10, 1898; Feb. 15, 1996.
Note that her name was spelled Rosa May in the bible of her grandparents, William Kanouse and Elizabeth Snyder. I will also note that she developed diabetes late in life.
