Raleigh Co, WV newpaper April 15, 1952: Obituary
" 'Mrs. Arminta McDowell, Pioneer Resident, Is Dead'
Mrs. Arminta P. McDowell, 92, one of Raleigh County's oldest native citizens, died at 4 am yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Grace O'Neal of Pax.
Mrs. McDowell was a granddaughter of Henry Hull, pioneer settler at Shady Spring who operated Hull Tavern for several years more than a century ago. Her father, the late Andrew Jackson Hull, was a Union soldier in the Civil War.
She was born at Shady Spring on May 7, 1859, and spent almost all her life in Raleigh County until the past few years when she had made her home with her daughter at Pax in Fayette County. She was the oldest living member of the First Christian Church in Beckley at the time of her death, having established her membership here more than half a century ago.
Her husband, J. W. McDowell, died in 1933, and two sons, John and Cam, died several years ago.
Her survivors include one sister, Mrs. Dora Robbins of Berkeley, Calif; four children, Mrs. O'Neal; Mrs. D. F. McKenzie of Beckley; Mrs. Annie Fabel of Montgomery, Ala; and Clyde McDowell of Lakeland, Fla; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the First Christian Church here with Dr. A. H. Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The body will remain at the Keyser Funeral Home until one hour prior to the service, when it will be taken to the church.
Active pallbearers will be Dewey Isley, Arthur Sydnor, John Rodgers McDowell, John Moore McDowell, Howard George and J. R. Beaty. Flowerbearers will include the Women's Council of the First Christian Church."

Also in a column:
"One of the few remaining octogenarian(sic) natives of Raleigh County passed away yesterday. We refer to Mrs. Arminta P. McDowell, who died at the age of 92. She was one of the last direct descendents of the Henry Hull family, being a granddaughter of the pioneer Shady Spring settler whose home became famous as a stopping place for the pioneer travelers coming into this section back before the Civil War.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mrs. McDowell's father was Andrew Jackson Hull, one of Henry Hull's seven children, all of whom were born at Peterstown, VA before the Hull family moved to Shady Spring, in 1832, and began operating one of those homey wayside taverns that became famous in that age.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The old-timers will recall that Henry Hull had some lovely daughters who mothered some of Raleigh County's most outstanding citizens. These girls were Susan, Margaret, Angeline, and Amanda. Two of them, Susan and Margaret, captured the hearts of two prominent Philadelphia engineers- William and Clarkson Prince- who had come to what is now Raleigh County in 1834 to look after the large tract of land acquired by their father, Isaac Prince.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's an interesting story in connection with the courtship and marriage of thr Prince brothers to the Hull sisters, and we may be a little rusty of the facts. At any rate, the Prince boys boarded at the Henry Hull tavern and one of them, Clarkson, as we recall, fell in love with the oldest Hull girl, Susan. He had his heart set on marrying the lovely young lady, but William grew lonely for Philadelphia and was determined to take his brother back home. They quarreled bitterly and after an exchange of words, William got his horse and set out homeward. Clarkson felt badly about the matter and saddled his horse and set out after his brother overtaking him this side of Hinton. He persuaded William to return to Shady Spring. The upshot of it all was just this: Clarkson went ahead and married Susan, and a couple of years later William took the hand of Margaret Hull when she reached the age of 15. They married young in those days.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These unions, of course, produced many of the Prince-Hull descendents in this area. Thr other two Hull girls found suitable mates also, Angeline married Robert Scott and Amanda married Lou Hundley.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two of the Hull boys also remained in Raleigh County. Lewis married Elizabeth Wright and operated a grist mill at Raleigh for many years. He was also rhe first sheriff of Raleigh County following the Civil War. Andrew Hull, the youngest son of Henry Hull's children, and the father of Mrs. Arminta McDowell, married Rebecca Deyerle. Both Lewis and Andrew were Union soldiers, being among the first to join up from this county. Andrew was captured and spent considerable time in a Confederate prison in South Carolina. He died at the early age of 38.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to Mrs. McDowell, there were three other children in the Andrew Jackson Hull family- Madora, William, and Edward G. As far as we know, these latter members of the family have left few if any descendents in this county. However, Madora, who married L. A. Robins, is still living in California. She is 91 years of age. The two boys moved from Raleigh County many years ago and both are now dead.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mrs. McDowell's children, who are great-grandchildren of Henry Hull, include Mrs. D. F. McKenzie, of Beckley; Mrs. Grace O'Neal, of Paz; Mrs. Annie Fabel of Alabama; and Clyde McDowell, who is now living in Florida. Some how, the Hull family has not been too prolific and it is regrettableto see this fine native stock diminishing."
