The Charleston Daily Times
Friday, March 28, 1884
Nearly half a century ago--how short it seems in looking back over it. Mrs. Sarah Cook, then a widow, with her two springy, vivacious and charming daughters--Misses Sallie and Julia--came from Roanoke County, in the Valley of Virginia, and settled in Charleston, then a village of about a thousand persons, consisting chiefly of Virginia families, and constituting a delightful society.
The Misses Cook were very attractive, very much admired and much courted. They were not long permitted to remain single. They both became happy brides the same evening. The elder, Sallie, as the wife of the late Jamed L. Carr, then a young lawyer from Albemarle County, Virginia; and the younger, Julia as the wife of the late James L. Carr, then a young merchant from Marietta, Ohio. They--the double couple--were married by the Rev. John Martin, then rector of St. John's Church, and in the house now occupied by Mrs. J. H. Fry.
There was probably not a happier or more charming young couple in the town, nor a more delightful place for the young folks of that day to visit, be hospitably entertained and made happy. But, as time passed, the decrees of the Fates wereripening. In 1845, the young and happy wife was left disconsolate widow, with two small children. The change was a sad one in many respects. Left with but limited resources, it soon became evident that instead of enjoying the life of ease and comfort in which she had been reared and hitherto lived, it would be necessay for her to support herself and rear her family, mainly by her own exertions.
Bravely accepting the inevitable, she undertook and cheerfully performed the duties before her.
She had devoted many years of her life to teaching in the public and private schools of the city, in which calling she had attained great profifiency and usefulness, and where she had endeared herself by her patient and gentle kindness to hundreds of the youth of this place, who have come under her tutelage.
During all her trials she has maintained a wonderful amount of cheerful vivacity and buoyancy of spirit. She was ever ready to meet her friends with a sunny smile, a pleasant word and an unusally hearty grip of the hand.
Recently she has had a pleasant home in the family of Major A. T. Laidley, of this city. Mrs. Laidley being the niece of her deceased husband.
Her health has been growing feeble for sometime past, though her last and fatal illness was of but short duration.
She retained her consciousness to the last. She was fully aware that the days of her years were numbered, but instead of regrets, or even simple resignation, she cheerfully welcomed the grim monster, and gladly departed with him in peace.
Mrs. McFarland was in her 65th year. She had been a member and communicant of the Presbyterian Church from early life, and died with all the hopes of her faith.
She leaves two children, Henry D. McFarland, of this city, and Mrs. Annie Steele, of Monroe county, West Virginia to mourn a mother's loss and miss a mother's love.
The many friends of Mrs. McFarland, and especially those who have known her through all the vicissitudes of life, will carry with them many pleasant memories of her, until they too shall lay down the burdens of life and go to their rest.
