Meaning of MANN

.
.

The text below was copied from a pamphlet produced in the 1930's or 1940's in Pasadena, California titled "The Manns and Their Name, A Genealogy." There is no author name in or on the pamphlet, so I don't know who to credit this data to. I received this copy from Beverly Schroeder, a lady I met on America On-Line.The following gif is the MANN coat of arms, as translated from the text from the pamphlet, "Sable, on a fesse embattled counter-embattled between three goats passant argent as many pellets".

One caveat supplied by someone who knows more about coats of arms then I do...

Since arms are usually attributed to the original holder, if you know the name, it helps dispell the impression many people have that the arms belongs to the family. If you don't know the original owner, a notation: "who this arms was held by is not known" or somesuch would do the same. I hope this helps. Ray

The Manns and Their Name

The name of MANN is said to have been of Saxon origin and to have been derived from MANNUS of Tacitus, fabled hero of the Saxon nations. It is found on the ancient English and early American records in the various forms of MAN, MANNE, MON, and MANN, of which the last is the most generally accepted today, and was occasionally combined with the prefix (le). The actual meaning of the name is simply "man".

The coat of arms of the family is described as follows:

Arms: "Sable, on a fesse embattled counter-embattled between three goats passant argent as many pellets."

Crest: "A demi-dragon, wings endorsed sable, guttee d'eau, inside of wings and talons proper."

Motto: "Per Ardua Stabillis." (Arms taken from Bruke's "General Armory", 1884)
