On March 17, 2011, the Lafayette Genealogical Society held its monthly meeting, with President Brenda Fuselier calling the meeting to order with a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Four new members were announced, along with vistor Donald Arceneaux.
Guest speaker, Brenda Comeaux Trahan was introduced and spoke on Grand Reveil Acadien/The Great Acadian Awakening to be held October7-16, 2011. The program venues are October 7-8 in New Orleans; October 9-10 in Houma; October 11-12 in Lake Charles; and October 13-16 in Lafayette, with Stephen White as guest speaker. There will be Acadian Music Concerts, Cajun Cuisine, seminars, lectures and gathering of Acadians from around the world. She also spoke on the Acadian Memorial Festival to be held on March 19, 2011 in St. Martinville and the Smithsonian Exhibit to be held on May 28 - July 9, 2011 in St. Martinville. Tables are available at the Grand Reveil Acadien for a fee of $300.00 and volunteers are needed for all the events mentioned.
Earl Gates mentioned that the minutes are on the LGS web site. It was also mentioned that he and Warren LeBlanc are working on the 2010 annual "Les Memoires" CD and should be available at next meeting.
Dorothy Burleigh motioned to get a table at the Grand Reveil Acadien, seconded by Pete Lavergne. Dorothy Burleigh also motioned to have Stephen White talk to LGS, perhaps on Genealogy reseach and DNA, seconded by Pete Lavergne. Committees will be selected to handle these projects.
All Genealogy books from the Main Library will be at the temporary location on Jefferson St. (the old McCory Building).
Upcoming meetings are: Lafayette Historical Assoc, Mar 17-19 at the Holiday Inn: Lake Charles Society, Mar. 19 at 10am; Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society, with guest speaker John Sellers, April 30, in Baton Rouge - fee $30 before Mar. 31 and $35 thereafter.
Warren LeBlanc, Treasurer, reported the ending balance as of Feb. 2011, $3,467.15 with 65 members.
Pete Lavergne motioned that the meeting be adjourned, seconded by Pat Snyder. All in attendence were invited for refreshments.
