Lafayette Genealogical Society

 

 

William Thibodeaux called the Lafayette Genealogical Society to order at 6:00 p.m. on July 15, 2010 at the new library on Johnston Street. Attending were: Jane Baker, James and Lorna Bourque, Dorothy Burleigh, Frances Doga, Viola Fontenot, Brenda Fuselier, Earl Gates, Warren LeBlanc, Martha Luby, Harold Prejean, Rogers Romero, Pat Snyder, Barbara Thibodeaux, Brenda Thibodeaux, librarian Sam Lolar and William. Guests were Joan Labbe Boudreaux and our speaker Elaine Clement.

 

The opening ritual of a moment of silence for our service men and women, those who have gone before us, and the infirmed was followed by the pledge of allegiance to our flag led by James Bourque. The minutes and treasurer�s report were deferred to the web site.

 

Elaine Clement who is with CODOFIL told us about her experiences researching her ancestors in France.

 

After a short break to enjoy refreshments the meeting resumed. William announced

 

+          We have cemetery books and CD�s on the Broussard Sacred Heart Cemetery for sale at $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members.

 

+          Guided tour of St. John Cemetery with Pete Lavergne will be Tuesday, July 20th beginning at 8:00 a.m.

 

+          August 7th Ms Jane Bulliard with the Acadia Memorial in St. Martinville will be our first Saturday speaker at the new library on Johnston Street.

 

+          August 19th Mr. Michel Antoine Nicolas president of the Louisiana Basque Society will lecture on Basque history and culture in relation to Louisiana and the gulf south region. His specialty is origins of surnames. We will meet an hour earlier in order to give Mr. Nicolas sufficient time for his presentation.

 

October 2nd Dr. John P. Doucet from Nicholls State University will talk on human molecular genetics and DNA. Dr. Doucet is also a poet, playwright, columnist and editor.

 

+          Reminder for members to submit their family tree charts and family histories.

 

Meeting adjourned with motion from Pete Lavergne, seconded by Pat Snider.

 

William thanked all for attending the meeting. Please have a safe trip home.
