Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, b. Feb. 23, 1680, d. Mar. 7, 1767, was a French-Canadian explorer and administrator who founded Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, La. The son of the Sieur de LONGUEUIL and the brother of the Sieur d'IBERVILLE, he earned military plaudits in the French naval campaigns against the English in the North Atlantic and Hudson Bay from 1695 to 1698. He took part in Iberville's expedition to the mouth of the Mississippi in 1698-99 and in 1700 explored up the Red River as far as Natchitoches. French control of the area was assured by alliances with the Indians.

Assuming command of the Louisiana colony in 1701, Bienville constructed (1702) a fort at 26-Mile Bluff on Mobile Bay; in 1710 the fort was moved to the present site of Mobile on the lower part of the bay. Superseded by the Sieur de CADILLAC in 1712, Bienville was restored (1717) to the governorship under the MISSISSIPPI SCHEME and founded New Orleans in 1718. The collapse of the Mississippi scheme and quarrels with other colonial administrators resulted in his recall in 1725. His reappointment in 1732 was greeted with rejoicing among the New Orleans settlers.

Indian wars occupied his time, however, and he never achieved the brilliance for which his supporters had hoped. He left Louisiana in 1743.

Bienville Parish, was named in honor of the
"Father of Louisiana",
Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville

Known as a fair-minded man to those who admired him, Bienville was attacked unmercifully by his enemies. A key figure in the establishment of French dominion on the Gulf of Mexico, he is still regarded as the founding father of New Orleans.

Online Here! The 1810 Census Images!

Originally, Bienville Parish was a part of the Territory of Orleans, then it was known as the Catholic Parish of St. Francis. In 1805 it became part of Natchitoches County which was changed to Natchitoches Parish in 1807. In 1828 old Natchitoches was divided and portions of it (including present Bienville Parish) became Claiborne Parish. In 1848 the lower part of Claiborne became Bienville Parish, it being named in honor of the  "Father of Louisiana", Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Bienville.
Legislative Act 183, creating Bienville Parish, was enacted during the administration of Governor Isaac Johnson.

census 1850 Census, Bienville Parish Page Index.

This is the first census for Bienville Parish, which was created from Claiborne Parish in 1848. Prior to the 1850 census, you will have to research Claiborne Parish census of 1840.

The 1850 census is also the first United States census listing all members of a household by name and giving their place of birth. It also gives value in real estate, value in personal estate, year married, year in school, if able to read or write, enumeration date and remarks. All of the categories are not included here, as you will see. If you find your ancestor, please go to the original microfilm records for the rest of the information. This will also provide a chance to check the information you find here.

There is no 1860 census for Bienville Parish, which was either lost or destroyed.
