Capt. J. W. Allen

To tell of the early settlement of Oberlin, or anything that pertains to its early history everyone knowns would be incomplete without something about Capt. Allen, who came here in 1874 and was the first merchant in the county and was one of the principal men in securing the town site and helping to start the city. Mr. Allen engaged in merchandising for a number of years, at one time having several stores in different towns in western Kansas. Mt. Allen has held many offices of trust and is at present county assessor. Of late years he has been engaged in farming. He lives very comfortably in the north part of the city and any one who cares to know anything about the early history of Oberlin can ask him for he was her and helped make it.
