152. Mary HIGGINBOTHAM^44,61 was born about 1786 in Elbert County, Georgia.

Mary was apparently not of age when her father died in 1810, and her uncle Francis was appointed her guardian. She may have joined other members of Francis' family in Feliciana Parish LA.

There is a discrepancy in her age and identification. There is a Bible record regarding a daughter, Sarah Martin Carter said to be a daughter of Charles Carter and Mary Carter, formerly Mary Higginbotham, were married on the 19th Dec 1822. Presumably Sarah would have been at least 15 - or born about 1806/7. That would mean her mother could not possibly have been a minor in 1810 - a guardianship would have had to be have been for some other purpose. Mary's second marriage is also listed in this Bible: John C. Flynn and Mrs. Mary Carter, widow of Chs. Carter, were married March 19th 1829.

Given that she was not married in 1810, but had 4 children by the time of her husband's death in August of 1819, she probably married within the next year or so. Presumably the marriage took place in Georgia, but no record has been found.

I believe this to be the Mary Higginbotham that married Charles Carter. Charles' brother George married Martha Higginbotham, first cousin of Mary and daughter of Francis. Charles died in 1819; Mary married (2) John Flynn, 19 Mar 1829, in Clinton, East Feliciana Parish LA [I have also seen this marriage as having taken place in Amite Co MS]

[Caleb & Lawson were likely the sons of Francis Higginbotham, Mary's uncle and guardian.]

The 1830 East Feliciana Parish census does have:
John C. Flinn: 2m 5-10, 2m 10-15, 2m 15-20, 1m 20-30, 1m 50-60
1f 5-10, 1f 15-20, 1f 40-50 [Mary would not seem to have been this old - I looked at 1850 and this John C was still living, age 75, and his younger wife's name was Elizabeth.]
The only John Flynn in Mississippi was in Washington Co.: 1m under 5, 1m age 20-30, 1f age 20-30. [This seems too young for this couple and Mary had her Carter children....]

Mary is said to have died 20 Jul 1833, East Feliciana.

Mary HIGGINBOTHAM and Charles CARTER were married about 1812. Charles CARTER, son of Thomas A. CARTER, died before 25 October 1819 in Amite County, Mississippi.
