According the Lloyd Armstong's "Shawville and Clarendon" James purchased
100 acres of Crown Land at NW1/2 Lot 2, Range 10 in Clarendon on December
31 1863.
Obituary Notice of James Smiley (The Equity)
Mr. James Smiley, an old resident of Morehead section, and the brother of
Messrs. Edward, Henry Samuel and Joseph, all of Clarendon, paid nature's
debt on Sunday night, 28th, dissolution taking place about 10 o'clock.
The late Mr. Smiley had been poor health for a considerable time past,
from heart trouble, which latterly developing dropsy caused his death.
The funeral took place on Tuesday to St. John's church, Morehead.

It is not clear when Maria Carty was born or where she was born. In the
1871 census she is listed as being 24 years old (Est. DOB 1847) born in
Ireland.
In the 1881 census she is 30 years old (est DOB 1851) born in Ireland.
In the 1891 census she is 45 years old (est DOB 1846) born in Ireland.
In the 1901 census, her date of birth is Nov 1 1949 , age is 51 years and
she is born in Quebec. Her obituary notice states that she was 81 years
old at the time of her death on June 30, 1924, which would put her date
of birth sometime around 1843-44 and place of birth would be Ireland.

The obituary has no date but either Jessie Cameron or her mother has dated
the obituary July 1924.
Note about baptismal certificate for daughter Isabella: Maria could write
but spelled Smiley 'Smiely'
