Story of M. J. Moore (written by him)
He was born Barbour County, Alabama 3-21-1854, at 9 months old came to La. in December. Weather was cold, country was thinly settled and the woods were full of game. They fed him on wild meat and he got hard to tame. But as time passed along they bought him brass toed shoes. He went to school a little and learned to read the news. But when the Civil War ended and his father came home he was taught to plow and his education was doomed. So he hit the world ruff and tumble but tried to shun the crooks because his father taught him that honesty was the best lesson in books. So as time kept passing on he decided to get married although he was very poor but he married a good Christian woman that tried to do her part. They learned to work and save and made money from the start. His children kept increasing until they numbered 13 and they began to meet reverses they never had forseen. They decided to leave the country and move into town. They had all kinds of propositions that schemers ever found. They put $2000 in a Star Merchantile store. It went into liquidation and never was seen no more. Then he decided to sell singer sewing machines to make a little stake and to learn to be succussful he must stay wide awake. He went traveling over the country, viewing the scenes, the main part of his business was selling singer machines. You would always find him up and about free from gout neither fat nor thin but they better look out along his route or he will sell them that sewing machine. So he got to making money and he got to feeling funny and he did not stay so poor. He rode a singer hack put his money in a sack and became the honorable M. J. Moore.

Mitchell Joel sold Singer Sewing Machines.

Letters written by Mitchel Joel Moore to Fannie (Moore) Norris

Castor La. March 23 - 31 (1931)
Sister Fannie Norris and Family especially that little sassy Evia Jewel
I will say we are all well now so far as I know and I was glad to hear from you all but tell Jewel she is too little to spank me & if them widows and old maids want to hav a spanking I may try to come out there. I am to go down to Noble La. In a few days to see one of my old sweet harts of 1878. The girl I almost loved as good as I did the one I married in that year and she has bin married 4 times & if she thinks

she is too old to get married again. She has a daughter about 50 so why not marry the girl & all live together. The old lady draws a pension on her last man of $60.00 per month and what I get out of the machine business we can get by & I think we could hav a hel of a good time for a while. I have got several letters from her & they sound good to me. I written her a valentine & she answered it. I wil repeat it to you on a separate sheet.

I wrote to her this
Hearts may break and vows be wasted
Toungs may lure with lying breath
But still the love that youth has tasted
Lingers sweetly until death

So she comes back with this
As sure as the rat runs up the rafter
You are the boy that I am after

Wel the train past before I could mail this to day but it wil leave tomorrow.
M. J. Moore
