George Wright Moore (Sr.) information from Mitchell Joel Moore letter written to Francis "Fannie" Etta Moore (my grandmother) and Sallie Johns who was corresponding with my niece Melody Farris Grigar back in the 1960?-70? era.

where was their land?? Did he die before Mitchell Joel donated land for
a family cemetery???

Second marriage of GeorgeWright (Sr.):

Note on back of page: Order of childrens ages unknown. Priss is the youngest

Moores (Sr. and Jr.) and that G.W. Sr.ssecond marriage was to a woman named Polly. This isNOT fact. All census and legaldocuments have the name George W. orGeorge Washington, however George Jr.'s children all say his name is GeorgeWright. There is never any mention of Sr. or Jr..

When I was checking the Georgia 1821 Land Grants in Clarke Co., Ga.and found the George W. Moore and George Moore (alphabetical index), my sister, Helyn, told me that our George W. (Jr.)(10 years before he was born.) was too young to be in this land grant. She has that right!!!

My sister(Helyn LorenaHobbs Farris) has a copy of a land grant??? in Louisiana

Hi Moore cousins

Found more information and have more questions!!! Since you three
apparently still have viable kinfolks in the Bienville/Red River Parish
area, HELP me!
I have put out 2 messages, no response yet.

Everyone knows that George Wright Moore (Jr) C.S.A. died Oct. 29, 1882 at
age 51 and his wife Eliza Jane Giddens died Dec. 28,1929 and NO ONE can
find their graves.

My sister interviewed their daughter Francis "Fannie" Etta Moore (our
grandmother) in the early 1950's, and she was sharp as a tack. (the
Bienville Book, Vol. II lists about 7 or 8 kids. Guess what? They had
15 kids and all the other children died young and are buried in Mt. Zion
Cemetery which Grandma said was 2-5 miles NW of Hall Summit, Red River
Parish. AND
she said George Hall Moore bought and placed tombstones on all the
graves.
At the time Grandma said this she told Helyn that the cemetery was grown
up in brush at that time (1950's). It will be interesting who else is
buried in that cemetery. This may solve a lot of lost graves. They may
have all died before
Red River became a Parish.

Helyn is going to mail me a copy of her notes of interviewing Fannie ,
our grandmother. Fannie was only 4'11" full grown, she was slim until
she broke her hip and spent the rest of her life in a wheel chair. She
had the complexion of an Indian, and the nose of an Indian. Her hair
was cole black straight and about 4' long until after Henry died. She
had some gray the last few years. She told Helyn that the children were
all so tiny when they were born they could not survive or they were
sickly and died. She had 3 sets of twins.

she knew my nickname was "Piny", I remember her talking
about Pony.

I am going to give you the list above of names, then later I will send
you the rest of the data when I a copy from Helyn. I think we have dates
on all of them.

I wish I had a reliable car, I would be on my way to find this cemetery
with a machete next weekend.. Please ask your cousins if they can find
this cemetery.
I'm going to write/email/call the road and bridge dept. to look on OLD
maps.
Let me know what you find, please.

Hello Norris/Moore Cousins
This is a transcript of a letter George Wright Moore wrote home during the Civil War to Eliza Jane Giddens Moore or her father Jacob Giddens.
Helyn has the originals. I am going to forward you a total of 3 letters.
Betty, will you forward these to Jan Parsons/Armstrong, please.

Saltila, Miss. Sept 7, 1862

Dear Father and Mother Brothers and Sisters

I take my pen in hand to inform you that I am in good health at this time hoping when this comes to have it may find you enjoying the same blessing. I have not had a letter from Eliza Jane since the first of June. She wrote to me that she was bad dissatisfied there and also that she was imposed on and could not get away from there. I received her letter the 20th of August. I have tried to get a furlough and could not do it. If I can hear from her again and her and my children has to be deviled back by infernal scums I will desert the army and come home and die with them. I never knowed what trouble was be fore. I cannot hear from my family much less see them.

Page 2

I have got money now if she had it. We are on a march north towards Memphis Tennessee. I don’t know where we will go to. They say we will have to fight some in a few days unless the Federals leave Corinth before we get there. I want you to help Eliza and the children all you can and you shall not lose anything by that if I should be so lucky to get home. Tell the old lady she and Betty must try to get them down there and take care of them till I get there. Tell Betty I saw Bud. It has been a month or more ago. I run two miles to see him and got to be with him about 10 minutes. He took the cars. They said they were agoing to Mobile. I have not heard from them since. I can go to my fathers in two days from here but I have rather see Eliza and the children more than to see everybody in the world. I feel like they are all the friends that I got in the world. I am determined to come home when my twelve months is out if not before should I live to see that time. I am in as fine health now you ever saw me. My weight is 152 pounds. That is the same did since I have been out. Tell Eliza to write to me as soon as she can and let me know how she is getting along and if she can not get along I will come in spite of my life. You all must write to me and let me know what the times is there. There is so much fuss here I can not think of nothing. Tell Eliza if she wants money I can put some in a letter and start it to her. Write soon as you get this. Write your letter to Saltila, Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Tell Eliza I am agoing to try to come home this fall if I can get off. Dirson?? Is my Captain Doctryu?? Is my colonel Cabule?? Is my general. So I must come to a close to Jacob Giddens with respect.
G W Mor

Tell Mitch and everybody bless their hearts

Pontotoc County, Mississippi Sept. the 3, l862

Dear wife and children. It is through the tender mercy of God that I have the opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am in good health. I hope when this comes to have it may find you and the children in good health. I want to see you and the children mighty bad. The Lord send that I could get a letter from you once more. The last letter I got from you you wrote it the 4 of June and I was sorry to hear that you was so bad dis satisfied . I tried to get to come home but I could not get off. I say to you write often for I know you have not got the money. I have not any way to send you any,. If I do see any chance I will send you for to feed them boys till I get there. God send I may see you and them soon is my prayer.

(opposite side of paper)

Tupelo, Miss.

Write to me as soon as you get this for I shall not see any peace till I hear from you. We are at Tupelo, Miss. Tho we shall leave here in a few days. They say we will go to Nashville, Tennessee. I know not where we shall go to if they do not let me come home till my twelve months is out. I am coming home at the risk of my life. Take care of your self and children till I get there. Mr. Thomas Par is dead and I Cottin Glass and Hyman and John Biter. I cannot tell how many more for every Buddy is here that is so much fuss I hear I can’t think of nothing. Let me hear from you as soon as you can so nothing more at this time. George W. Moer to Mrs. Eliza Jane Moer Mitchell J and George W. Moer June year (junior)

In reply to Cousin Jan Armstrong's questions about the Civil War Letters:
My sister, Helyn Farris has the originals. Henry Abud Norris died in June 1955 and I believe my mother, Evia Jewell "Sis" Norris Hobbs got Helyn to take Grandma (Francis "Fannie" Etta Moore Norris) to Helyn's house for a couple of weeks because we did not have anyone to stay with Grandma.

I was probably in 10th-11th grade and Helyn was probably about age 21-22.
She started asking Grandma about our ancestry, Grandma was as sharp as a tack and she loved to talk, especially about the kin in Louisiana. Helyn took notes, and notes, and Grandma kept talking. When Helyn took Grandma home, Grandma started going through her old trunk (I still have the trunk)
and gave Helyn the Civil War Letters, letters from Mitchell Joel Moore, the "grant" on some land in Louisiana. I do not know what else. about our genealogy, etc. In the notes is where Grandma listed the names in birth order
of all the 15 children and told Helyn about burying them in the Old Mt. Zion Cemetery, not the Mt. Zion Cemetery near the Mt. Zion Church. Grandma was thrilled to death for Helyn to be interested in family history.

Actually, as Helyn pointed out to me, the Civil War letters were actually "love letters" he was so concerned about Eliza Jane and his children, all he could think about was getting back home to his wife and children. It is interesting to me to note that he listed people from his home town, saying they had died. I wonder if this is the way families found out first that their husband/son was dead?

All my life I have heard the stories about the Civil War and Eliza Jane having to hide with the children in the woods while the Union went through the house. Then when I looked at the list of kids I had for their marriage, it listed Mitchell Joel Moore, then it skipped until after the war before they started having kids again, I called Helyn and asked "what happened to the kids", she went back to her notes she took from Grandma and came up with all the children's names, birth order, we knew there were 3 sets of twins, etc.

I'm suppose to get a copy of all Helyn's notes she got from talking to Grandma. With Bill's illness, and dealing with my Mother this week, I'm not going to rush her. We have pictures of Eliza Jane and George Wright Moore, I'll get you'all a copy as soon as I can.

Keep in touch, Jeannine [email protected]

Hello cousins,

Buddy got back for my mothers, Evia's"Sis", 90th birthday party. She
informed me Sunday night that she was going to have to start planning
earlier, get more people to help for her 91st. We try to keep it under
control more since the year we invited about 75 and she invited 460 more
without our knowledge.
She is doing much better with her pacemaker.

Buddy went up to Margie McFerren in La. and got more information. He has
contacted the Civil War Museums for each of the LA Units, and found our
George W. Moore entered the Civil War in Arkansas because he had killed
some man on his front porch, the family of the man he killed was mad, so,
he moved to Colombia Co.???,Arkansas for a short time, I think as a
caretaker on a plantation, then, he joined the Confederacy in Arkansas,
evidently leaving her there with all the kids. This explains some of his
messages in the letters he mailed to her and to Jacob Giddens about her
being mistreated. When Buddy got in contact by e-mail and phone with
the curators??? of the Civil War Records, they confirmed by comparing
where EACH unit was on EACH DAY. This helped confirm that he was in the
Arkansas Unit.

When Buddy arrived at the Ft. Pillow Battleground park Museum, they
confirmed the military records to the letters. He visited each place
the Unit fought. We have always known that he would sneak back home, plow
an put in a crop... usually wearing her bonnet/clothes while he plowed to
disguise himself in case anyone rode or walked up. He would go back,
find his unit or join another unit until he had to go back home again to
check on his wife kids.

His unit at the battle of Cornith, Miss., his unit was one of the first
into battle and they did such a great job, his Coronel or General Cabell
got a great promotion.
Margie says he was a prisoner of war, and we have a receipt where he was
released from being a prisoner of war at the end of the war.

NOW for the great news: Buddy left his card at each of these places, he
received a call on his cell phone and the head of the Ft. Pillow Museum
asked him to come back. When Buddy arrived, the man told Buddy that was
the first time descendents had walked in with letters from the actual
battle and explained what was going on, who had died, and actual
conditions. They had all the military records on display, but, they
would like to do a display of George W. Moore, the letters, his picture,
etc. Buddy immediately call Marjorie McFerren to get that part of the
family's feelings and they have agreed to provide information for a
permanent display on George W. Moore. We are excited, hope you are too.
I hope we can include the genealogy of George and Eliza their ancestors
and descendents.

How do you feel???? Let me know? Do you have a picture or anything you
want included???

To all our Cousins:
Buddy and MaryEllen have the right to correct anything that I have written below.
This was taken over a cell phone, and static does occur.

Buddy and MaryEllen in search of the Watt Cemetery they found the following tombstones. 5 of the 14 or 15 children they had.

Children of George W.Moore and Eliza Jane Giddens

Each male tombstone had either a Lamb for the boys, Dove for the girls, and each of the following tombstones started with "Son of GW & EJ Moore" or "Daughter of GW & EJ Moore"

Daughter of GW & EJ Moore
Mary Elizabeth Moore born: April 13, 1857 died:. March 10, 1860

Son of GW & EJ Moore
George William Moore bornDec. __ 1855 died: May 3, 1862
Note: George was spelled different::: Georgrgd... I will have to explain later.

Daughter of GW & EJ Moore
Georgean Moore born: Dec. 5, 1865 died: July 19,1874

Son of GW & EJ Moore
Charley Moore born: Oct. 12, 1863 died: Jan.9, 1865

Daughter of GW & EJ Moore
Sally Moore born: July 18, 1867 died: July 23, 1867

PERRY Tombstones found.

Robert Wilbern Perry born: April 23,1854 (no death date given)

Willis Edward Jones Perry born:Feb. 10, 1856 (no death date given)

Henry Clay Perry born: Oct. 11, 1862 (no death date given)

Thomas Franklin Perry born: June 20, 1857 (no death date given)

ALSO:

Infant Son of Robert & Elva Cook born and died 1868

Buddy said it took them 2 hours with machetes hacking their way in the direction of the cemetery. They were about to give up due to exhaustion when they spotted Mary Elizabeth Moore's tombstone. They were so exhausted they could only clear out enough to read the tombstones they could see and find. He took my suggestion to probe down about 5 inches into the soil and they did find one of the Perry tombstones. This means there could be more tombstones 5" or more deep that they could not find. All the tombstones were evidently placed there about the same time, apparently about 1890, from the letter we have to Helyn Hobbs Farris (our sister) from a cousin in Louisiana written in the 1955 era. Buddy seems to think this Elva Cook is kin, perhaps as a Moore, Giddens, or some way.
I do not have all my Moore & Giddens data in my computer. I hope to have it entered maybe in a week, so I will let you know if they are kin. If you know anything let me know.or to add.

Buddy said the brush is so thick, that even with a path cleared it took them 20 minutes to work their way back out of the thicket. Very obvious that to clear this cemetery and prode for more tombstones will be a big job. He feels the whole or group of the relatives of these families need to decide what we want to do to clear and preserve this cemetery, not just our family. Perhaps, we could get some scouts to take it on as a project.

Later today, they made it to the library in Ringgold and found the "first book" that Diana Quinn found with the picture of the old man in the Rocking Chair. This book says the picture is of our ancestor, Jacob Giddens. The picture was then printed in the History of Bienville Parish Vol. II book but the picture was labeled as being Erasmus Giddens (James T. Giddens??, son of Danel Giddens.) They contacted the author of the "first book" (she is still alive and she wrote the book for her mother who is in a nursing home) and she HAS THE ORIGINAL of the picture, and YES, THIS PICTURE IN THE BIENVILLE Parish book Vol.II
is a picture of our JACOB GIDDENS, and someone put the wrong name on it.
They have Xeroxed pages 150, 151, 152, 154, and 156 of the FIRST book and it is suppose to have information on the Giddens, Waters, etc.. I can't wait to see what is on these pages. Diana Quinn emailed us page 150 and 151, and my computer would only print out very faintly. It says something about the Waters, Giddens, and Perry's intermarried and how they are kin. I have been chasing Waters cousins and getting nowhere.

TO ALL OUR COUSINS THAT I AM SENDING THIS TO WHO HAVE NOT BEEN IN ON ALL OUR CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THIS WATTS CEMETERY IN BIENVILLE PARISH, LOUISIANA CHECK THESE WEBSITES AND YOU WILL FIND PARTS OF OUR ANCESTRY ON THE MOORE-GIDDENS lines:

Go to google: type in Jacob Giddens you will find JanArmstong freepages web site information. You will probably find Diana Quinns website on the Giddens, and type in [email protected] and you will find another branch of our Moores.

Anyway, let's keep each other up dated as we go along.
Let me know if you have any questions.

In clearing my work table to make space for a Deadline on the Farris lines, I had these misc. items that I ran across recently while looking through National Archives records on the Farris tribes that I thought you might want as I don't know who/what your source was for the info you have. This is info that will serve as documentation should anyone desire same. As well as give you the location of the documents should you want to order same.

My note...I feel the J.J. Norris above was prob. in the same company as burrell. In this list of prisoners there are some including another Norris captured at Chattanooga that were in the 30th Inf from Tenn....however see the next item about J>J> Norris
However the handwriting is quite clear and meticulus.
Roll M 598-39
however this roll shows only J.J. Norris listed as #240 and Burrell Norris #257 both captured Nov 25, 1863 at Missionary Ridge, Tenn. Forwarded to Louisville, Ky. December 5th, 1863. For Exchange
At the bottom of the list of names was the notation "Paroled at Vicksburg. Was taken in arms"
