Southwest of Pittsfield, some 12 miles in the southwestern part of the county, is the compact and social little city of Milton. In population and wealth it ranks fifth in the county; has a pretty little park square, some good brick blocks and enjoys a substantial trade from a rich country surrounding.

   The Methodist and Christian denominations have houses of worship, Reverend Flagg being pastor of the former while the latter has not been supplied since the uncermonious withdrawal of their former minister.

   Professor J. M. Wilkins has been retained as principal of the schools, and Misses Allen and Selway are assistants.

   Prosperous societies of Masons and Odd Fellows are here and the Knights of Pythias have a flourishing lodge. Croquet has been reduced to a science in this place, and the most successful players own the handsomest grounds in the country are said to be in this vicinity. Mr. L. O. Plant is the efficient postmaster, and the stirring Clay Morton accommmodates the public at the Eagle Hotel. Mr. C. C. Hall has the enthusiasm of a successful business man, and carries a large and well selected stock of groceries, hardware and queensware, etc. David S. Croft has a good general stock of merchandise and F. H. Davis is the boss confectionary man, pleasant and obliging. Milton deserves a good letter and shall have it upon a more extended visit.
