Biography

Derl Houghton: * Family tradition said that the Houghton family came to Upper Canada about 1805, with other Vermont families who moved to this area at about this time. Many families were related by blood or marriage, or were close acquaintances.

*Joseph is listed as living in South Crosby Township, Johnstown District , Upper Canada, on Lot 12, Concession 4 and 5 in 1830 , this is the north shores of Sand Lake, near the present town of Elgin, Ontario . This location is mentioned in two letters written by Nellie Houghton to Riley Houghton in 1928. They also mention that great-grandfather (Jonathan) moved to, and lived in Bedford Township, later in Westport, Ontario. The population of North and South Crosby Townships in 1830 was 145. The early 1800's are a genealogically difficult period for this area.

CJV: Several Houghtons of this group are genetically related to John Houghton of Lancaster MA, through his son Justice John via DNA testing³

Research

William Wells Houghton: "On your Houghton Family Project web site you show a connection from Reuben to a Joseph & Hanna as his parents. To my knowledge there is no evidence to support that connection. I have been in contact previously with the people that have made that assertion on other websites and they have not been able to show any source evidence to support it. There is a family Bible that some said made the connection. I found that Bible imaged on the internet and it does not have Reuben in it.

I have not found anything that substantiates that a Hanna/Hannah is Reuben's mother. Even the source that I cited for Reuben is only a very weak secondary source.

Rueben Houghton and his wife Elizabeth Ferre joined the LDS (Mormon) Church and migrated to the Nauvoo, IL area in the early 1840s, I believe. Then I have found Reuben listed in the 1850 Census of Lee County, Iowa. His age is given as 54. Birth in NY or VT (Hard to read which). There are two children listed, John age 8 born in Oh and George age 14 born in Canada. I believe that Rueben was married in what is now Ontario, Canada, but there is no proof.

I have also found a Probate Record from Lee County, Iowa. The Estate Administrator was appointed on 8 Oct 1850. It does not list any real estate or a widow (wife died after Feb 1846). But it does list a minor son Jno. Houghton. I believe this son John was probably my GGrandfather John Henry Houghton born in 1843 in the Nauvoo area.

Unfortunately some of this is family legend and not yet proven."

Biography

Joseph Longley, s o n of Deacon John of Groton and Deborah (Houghton), his second wife, and half-brother of William, John and Jonas, who had previously become residents of Shirley. He (Joseph) was b. at Groton, Sept. 12, 1724, m. Mary Walker, and became an inhabitant of what is now Shirley, a few years before it was incorporated a town. He owned the farm which is now the home of William P. Wilbur, situated near the South Village. At the organization of the town, in 1753, he was appointed chairman of the board of selectmen, five in number, and was also chosen clerk of the town at the same meeting. He was four times elected to the first office, and was retained as clerk until 1758, when he entered his majesty's service, and was mortally wounded in the battle and defeat at Fort W'illiam. He d. at Greenbush, N. Y. He had seven children.²
