born in March of 1846 she would be 79 years, 3 months, 2 days old.2,3 |

Maggie just recorded twice.5 |

Cen1870 | 23 June 1870 |
Margaret J Black appears on the 1870 census taken 23 June 1870 in
Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois as Maggie Dow, 23, born in PA., Wife of
George Dow, 34, born in MA. They were living 3 residences from William
and Adelia Black in the 1st Ward of Freeport city. This George Dow was
a Patent Rights Dealer. Does that mean that he was a land salesman??
This information is consistent with Marguerite Erwin's idea that her
name may have been DOW.8 |

This little house in Freeport, Illinois was the house where
William Black and Adelia Jones raised their family. It MAY also
be the house in which Maggie Black Dow lived with her husband George
Dow. The numbers and street names have been changed in recent
years and we can not be sure. This photo was taken by Les Black about 1997. |

CityDir | 1872 | Margaret J Black and George H Dow

1880 | Find 1880
Can not find Margaret on the 1880 census. She is not in Lincoln
twp of Ogle county, Illinois, where her second husband resided in 1880.
Interesting note: In Lincoln township there is a Casey or Caskey family
from PA living next door to a William Wilson family from PA. Could
these people be related to Maggie's mother, Charlotte Wilson and
possibly Maggie's brother's wife Eliza Caskey? She shoud be about 34
years old. Look for Margaret Black, Margaret Dow or Maggie Black,
Maggie Dow.10 |
|||||||||

|||||||||

|||||||||
Cen1900 | 1900 | On the 1900 census she shows at 215 Douglas
Street in Ward 1 of Freeport, Stephenson. Working in the household of
T. Hughes as a housekeeper. Gives age as 54, single, and born in Pennsylvania in March of 1846. Both parents born in PA and she can read and write.2 |

She may have moved to Mt. Carroll about 1921 as her death certificate
says that she had been living in Carroll county for 4 years and she
died in 1925. |

Burial | 13 June 1925 | She was buried on 13 June 1925 at City Cemetery in Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois.18 |
||||||||
Education | On 1900 census she claims that she can read and write, but signed her marriage license in 1885 with an X, and in 1910 she says that she CAN NOT read or write. Therefore I assume that she really could not read or write. |
