Birth calculations from info given on 1860 census gives a birth date of about 1836 with birth place of Pennsylvania. 1900 and 1910 census indicate that she may have been born as late as 1846. On 1900 census she says that she was born in March 1846 in Pennsylvania. Death certificate gives 8 March 1846 as date and place as Gettysburg, PA. The death cert. says she was 79 years, 2 months and 2 days old. If born in March of 1846 she would be 79 years, 3 months, 2 days old.2,3

They were living 3 residences from William and Adelia Black in the 1st Ward of Freeport city. This George Dow was a Patent Rights Dealer. Does that mean that he was a land salesman?? This information is consistent with Marguerite Erwin's idea that her name may have been DOW.8

House in Freeport.
This little house in Freeport, Illinois was the house where William Black and Adelia Jones raised their family.  It MAY also be the house in which Maggie Black Dow lived with her husband George Dow.  The numbers and street names have been changed in recent years and we can not be sure.  This photo was taken by Les Black about 1997.

CityDir 1872 Margaret J Black and George H Dow show on the 1872 City Directory of Freeport Illinois on the southeast corner of Oak and Walnut  . This house is still standing in 1997 but now the streets are Ordway and Walnut. It is a green two story house.

1880 Find 1880 Can not find Margaret on the 1880 census.  She is not in Lincoln twp of Ogle county, Illinois, where her second husband resided in 1880. Interesting note: In Lincoln township there is a Casey or Caskey family from PA living next door to a William Wilson family from PA. Could these people be related to Maggie's mother, Charlotte Wilson and possibly Maggie's brother's wife Eliza Caskey? She shoud be about 34 years old. Look for Margaret Black, Margaret Dow or Maggie Black, Maggie Dow.10

19 January 1885 In January of 1885 her father, William Henry Black, died.11,12
