Birth 11 May 1828 George H may have born on 11 May 1828 at Littletown, Massachusetts. Death certificate says 50 years 1 month and either 2-3 days or 23 days. Cemetery index says 50 years 1 month and 24 days.1  but on the 1870 census he claims to be 34 years old, which would put his birthdate at about 1836.  Since the death certificate information was likely given by wife Maggie, who it seems, could neither read nor write, she may have given erroneous information.

Birth place is most likely Littleton, which is NW of Boston in Middlesex county, Massachusetts.

1860 Has not been found on ANY census early that the 1870.

Living 1861 May have been living in Illinois as early as 1861 as the Death certificate says that he had been in Illinois for about 17 years.1

Marriage 28 Sept 1868 George H Dow married Margaret J Black, daughter of William Henry Black and Charlotte Wilson, on 28 September 1868 at Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois. This marriage is recorded in Vol7 Cert 12, Freeport, Stephenson, IL marriage records. No hard copy.2

Occupation The death certificate gives his occupation as Mechanic and Blacksmith.

Cen1870 23 June 1870 George H Dow appears on the 1870 census taken 23 June 1870 in the 1st Ward of Freeport Illinois as George Dow, 34, born in MA. George and Margaret Dow  were living 3 residences from William and Adelia Black who are the father and step-mother of Margarget Black Dow.. This George Dow was a Patent Rights Dealer. There is no child in this household.  Margaret is 23 years old.

CityDir 1872 George H Dow and Margaret J Black show on the 1872 City Directory of Freeport Illinois on the south east corner of Oak and Walnut streets . This house is still standing in 1997 but now the streets are Ordway and Walnut. It is a green two story house.

CityDir 1875 George H Dow shows on the 1875 City Directory of Freeport Illinois in the first ward, on the north side of Oak street, east of West Street.   Occupation given as "patent rights agent".3

Illness between 1870 and 1878 Death cert says that he had suffered from pulmonary consumption for about 8 years, which was the ultimate cause of death.1

1878 Doctor signing  death cert  was O.E. Stearns; and the Undertaker was Hunt & Earning or somthing like that.1

Name Variation 1878  George H Dow was also found as Dowd.

Death 17 June 1878 George H Dow died on 17 June 1878 in  Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois, at age 50.1 
Obituary 19 June 1878 The Obituary from the Freeport Daily Bulletin, of Freeport,  Illinois is as follows:

 George Dow was intered this afternoon with Masonic ceremonies in the City cemetery.4  

Burial 19 June 1878 George H Dow was buried on the 19th of June 1878  in Freeport, Stephenson, Illinois.4
