Return to the Barren County 1850 Census Index main menu.
Below are links to the pages that contain an alphabetized list of the households in the 1850 Barren County census. The original transcriptions were made by Sandi Gorin, and posted on the South-Central KY mail list. Each household is identified according to the census division (1 or 2), the census page number, and the household number. Additional information about this index is given below the links chart.
In this index, the surname is given in all capital letters, followed by the name of the head of the household, in this case William A.
At the end of the listing, in brackets, is the location information beginning with the division number. There were two divisions. Division 1 began on census page 306. The last part of Division 1 included the city of Glasgow, and began on page 395 with household #1274-1304. Division 2 began on page 404. The next number given is the page number. In the example above, the Bowles household may be found on census page 419B. The census pages are stamped with numbers on every other page, so page 419B is the page following the page stamped 419. Another thing to keep in mind is that the household listing may begin on one page and continue to the next one.
Next is the household number, in this case 229-233. The first number, 229, indicates the number of the household in the order visited by the census taker. The second number, 233, indicates the number of the family in the order visited. Since more than more family may live at a single household, the second number may be larger that the first one. Something to keep in mind is that not every person with a different surname in a household may be listed in this index; only those who were assigned a household/family number. For example, household 18-19 of Division 2 includes Jesse COX, a 69 year old male, although you will not find him in this index. You will sometimes find elderly parents in a household who do not appear in this index. This may be the case with Mr. Cox.
